OHN "JACK" HALPIN HYDE:
The old house on Evans was in an old neighborhood that had turned over and was well past going down hill. I remember walking the dog with him and he never seemed afraid or concerned about his well being. Of course looking back, at the time I was too young to know any better. It seemed like a nice, normal area, only most everyone was black. This is probably where most of his grandchildren experienced their first racial experiences, and it probably helped most of us grow up with fewer prejudices than other kids of the time growing up in conservative, middle class neighborhoods.

Jack Hyde was a colorful individual. There are so many things that come to mind when thinking of Grandpa it's hard to know where to begin. Probably my first memories are of him telling me to sit up "sit straight as an arrow" and he always put his hand straight up. Sometimes he would do that "whistle" thing and when you looked over there his hand would be - straight up and he would have a very serious look on his face.

Going to the river on Saturdays was always exciting. Walking among the boats and trying to spin the props without getting caught. By the age of four I was sure that I would have a hand chopped off by one of those props. I always remember riding to or from the river, it didn't matter, and Grandpa would see an old run down shack and say, "That's where David's going to live". I'm sure he did that to everyone. A couple of pieces of artwork I purchased were of a river and an old shack. I wonder what Grandpa would say now!

I also remember his old TV, how could he watch that thing with the squiggly line down the center? And he must be the only person in the world who ever ate a half a Reese and saved the other half for later.

For a young child Grandpa was very intimidating and he used to scare me to death. I remember one time I snuck a piece of candy and he caught me. Well, we were just about to leave to go back to Indianapolis and to teach me a lesson he told me that it a X-Lax! Well, the joke was one him, because I didn't know what that was, so I just acted sorry and we left.

Jack Hyde was a great story teller.
