ELEVENTH GENERATION

1676. John GORHAM ** CAPT. (880) (881) was born on 28 Jan 1619/20 in Benefield, Northampton, England. (882)(883) (813) The Northamptonshire branch of the Gorhams are supposed to have descended from Sir Hugh de Gorham and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Sir William l'Angevia. Sir Hugh de Gorham, in 1281, possessed the manor of Churchfield in the parish of Oundle, and land in Benefield which had belonged to his wife's father. More than three hundred years later, the baptism of John Gorram, son of Ralph Gorram was entered in the Benefield register. He was christened on 28 Jan 1621 in Benefield, Nrthampton, England. (884) He came to America on board the PHILIP, master Richard Morgan, on 20 Jun 1635 from landing in Plymouth. (885)(886) He died on 5 Feb 1675/76 in Swansea, Bristol, MA.(887) He was buried on 15 Feb 1676. He has Ancestral File number 8L9W-D7. Following the birth of their first child the Gorhams lived in Plymouth until about 1645
when they moved to Marshfield. John was chosen constable in Marshfield in 1648.Their Great Grandson, Col. John Gorham, recorded in his "Wast Book" that John Gorham went home to England about this time but returned soon to his family. They moved from Marshfield to Yarmouth in 1652 and then; the Wast Book states, they moved to Barnstable to begin a township called Barnstable. (He) Built Mills . tan fatts &c. We know that Gorham did have a grist mill and a tannery there. He was surveyor of highways in 1654

In Oct. 1675 Capt. John Gorham was in command of a Company of English and Indians at Swamp Naraganset (in King Philips War ) where in Feb. 1676 he was mortally wounded when his powder horn was hit and split against his side, driving pieces of horn and powder into his body. He died at Swansey on Feb. 5, 1676.

On June 6, 1733, in honor and recognition of his service in 1675, the heirs of Capt. Gorham of Yarmouth were made grantees of 96 lots in Narragansett township No.7 (now Gorham,Maine). (p.439 "S0LDIERS OF KING PHILIPS WAR", George Madison Bodge, Boston 1906)

1677. Desire HOWLAND ** was born on 13 Oct 1623 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA. (890) She died 13 OCT1683 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA. (891)(892) She was christened in Plymouth, Mass.. She has Ancestral File number 842X-1R. Children were:

She died on 30 Oct 1700 in Yarmouth, , MA.(894) The Yarmouth Town records give the death date as 30 Oct., the Family Bible gives the date of death as 30 June. She has Ancestral File number 8M54-QF.

child iv. James GORHAM was christened about Apr 1650 in Plymouth, Mass.. He was born on 28 Apr 1650 in Marshfield, MA. He died on 18 Nov 1707 in Barnstable, MA. He has Ancestral File number 8J1K-ZS.
child v. Lt.Col. John GORHAM(895) (896) was christened about Feb 1652 in Plymouth, Mass.. He was born on 20 Feb 1652 in Marshfield, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He died on 11 Nov 1716 in Barnstable, Barnstable, MA. He has Ancestral File number 8M54-TX. He was a Captain in the Canada Expedition of 1690, under Major Walley, and is usually referred to as Lt.Col. having acquired that title later, in the militia.

John Gorham, who lived near Great Pond, in Barnstable an area which was primarily concerned with farming, started a fishing fleet which he further developed into a shipping company. This coincided with the first whaler being sent out by Capt. Solomon Sturgis
in 1741 (the ship was lost to a Spanish pirate on its first voyage).

In May of 1695 Shuball Gorham (youngest son of Capt. John) married Puella Hussey in Nantucket; but when Shuball, Capt. John, Lt.Col. John, and all of the other members of the wedding party were going over to Nantucket for the wedding, they were taken prisoners and stripped by a small French Shallop from Port Royall between Nantucket & Hyanas. They obviously did get to Nantucket because Shuball and Puella did get married.
