William CLIFT Colonel⁽²⁴⁾⁽⁶²²⁾⁽⁶²³⁾⁽⁴⁸⁾ was born about 5 Dec 1794 in Greene Co., Tennessee. He was living in 1849 in Hamilton Co., Tennessee. According to statement on father's will - "...appoint my sons William Clift and James Clift of Hamilton County...." He appeared on the census in 1850 in Hamilton Co., Tennessee. He served in the military between 1860 and 1864 in Civil War. Took unit from Tennessee and fought for the Union. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Hamilton Co., Tennessee. Ed. 50, Sheet 46, Line 46, Dist. #112. Census impossible to read (#1255259) entire line.
Clift, William-w-m-84-Farmer?-TN-MD-MD. He died on 17 Apr 1886 in Hamilton Co., Tennessee.⁽⁶²⁴⁾⁽¹⁰⁰⁾ Another document from First Families of Tennessee gives death date as 02-Nov-1806. He was buried after 17 Apr 1886 in Soddy Presbyterian Cemetery, Hamilton Co., Tennessee. Per David Hardin Wallace:
James Clift and Alice Hitchcock were the parents of Col. William Clift (Dec. 5, 1794-Feb. 17, 1886). He was a colorful character and has been called Hamilton Count's first millionaire. Among is better known descendants are Montgomery Clift, the actor, and Anna Mae Clift, the model for Vargas girl paintings.
Col. William Clift was my great-great-grandfather. In addition to being a very wealthy man, he is remembered as a Union sympathizer, who had sons on both sides during the Civil War, and when he was captured near Knoxville, the unit that guarded him was commanded by one of his sons. He supposedly built a cannon from a hollowed tree trunk that resulted in a tremendous explosion when being test fired. Years after his death, his many descendants tried to settle his estate which resulted in a serious court case. By the time it was settled, the heirs got only a few dollars, but the lawyers did well. Entered into the court case was a so-called "Clift Wheel". It is a large document with the Col. in the center, his direct off-springs forming the first concentric circle, their children forming the second, etc. Parents: James CLIFT Sr. and Alice HITCHCOCK.
