Editor:

As there is a lapse of 47 years between my first letter from Bagdad and
the second one, my friends have requested me to keep my chapters closer
together as they may not be able to get the gist of the story. If any
town of this size can beat this age limit, let us hear from you.
Beginning with MRS. MATT WEST who died here last week at the age of 83,
she had lived here all her life. Her husband, ABSOLOM WEST, also died
here at age 79.
MRS. DAVE GOSS, age 72, is living. Her sister, MRS. LOUIS COOPER, 81,
was at MRS. WEST's funeral, but said she felt as young as ever. LOUIS
COOPER died at the age of about 80.
MRS. BUNCH, still living here, is 81; her husband died here at the age
of 82. MR. HAMMOND lives here, age 77. RUTH CAVENAUGH, 72, MRS. DAMANTHA
PILLEY, wife of REV. W. B. PILLEY who died here at age 80. MRS. PILLEY is
still in good health, age now 89 years. EZRA MOSS died here, age 87. MR.
LANDRY died here, age 90. He was the father of MRS. GERMAN WING: MR. and
MRS. WING were here at my place yesterday. MR. GERMAN WING is 74 and MRS.
WING is 73. GEORGE RIFFLEY, my neighbor living across the road from me,
is 76 years of age. He is still plowing Old Tom his old plow horse that
will be 27 years old this spring. MR. RIFFLEY lives on the old home
NATHAN SMITH, one of the first settlers here, who died near 80 years of
age. HIRAM MIMS another one of the pioneers was about 80.
My grandmother MRS. MARTHA MIMS who came here with us from Georgia, died
at 76. ASA CANADY died here - 80 years of age; JAMES M. JONES, 75, TOM
PARKER, 78, JAMES COLLINS, 70, ADAM HORTMAN, 90; MR. BLACK, 91, MRS.
LAFOLLETTE, still living, 76. D. C. GRANT, still living, 70; MRS. C. A.
LUTZ, still living, 74; MRS. SARAH WOODS, about 70. JOHN HOFFMAN died age
about 80, JOHN DETTENHAOFF, 81. AUSTIN CLIFTON, who settled the Hortman
ferry place in 1858 died at Choupique, age 84. ED GREEN, age 76; MRS.
ALCIDE LEMUR, still living, 77. JOHN PHILIPS, 90; PETER PLATZ, 80; H. C.
GILL, 81; VESS GOSSET, 79; JACKSON ELDER, 80; WILLIAM CALVIT, 84; MRS.
MARTHA WIDCAMP died aged 79. And others I may have overlooked. JACK
GLOVER, West Fork, died at 98.
A list of the colored folks below: Aunt TILDY SMITH, age 115 years,
dead. BOB TILLMAN, 113, dead. SIGH MIMS, 99, dead. BOB ILES, 98, dead.
JONAS WALLACE, 96, dead. JONAS WALLACE was once owned by my grandfather,
DR. ROBERT WALLACE of Marietta, Georgia, but had lived at Westlake for
many years. He died last year. HANNAH TILLMAN, wife of BOB TILLMAN, age
94. Even animals live their time out in Bagdad. My squirrel dog, Beaver,
well known to hunters in this section, died last year, age 15 years. He
had to his credit over 1000 squirrels.

P. S. A hint to insurance companies: I have lived here since 1876. Only
two fires since that time. Here two houses burned in Bagdad in 52 years,
the BATES home in 1910 and VESS GOSSETT's home in 1880.

an old sawmill on the west side of the river, north of Westlake. Bagdad
is now a favorite place for homes for people of Lake Charles. The name is
merely a fanciful one and the place was formerly called Lisbon.)
