One of the first jewlers in Bellevue was C. K. (Kid) Shay who conducted his business in the 1860's.

From letter by Aunt Belle to "Cheryl": Grandpa Shay was probably a jeweller. We know he did clock repair as we had a number of old clocks left by him. In fact I still have one old Seth Thomas wall clock that is supposed to be made in the 1840's. It still runs. He appeared on the census on 12 Jun 1860 in BELLEVUE, Jackson Co., IOWA. He appeared on the census on 23 Jun 1870 in BELLEVUE, Jackson Co., IOWA. He died on 14 Nov 1878 in BELLEVUE, Jackson Co., IOWA. Not shown with family on 1880 census. According to wife's obituary died 18 years before she did in 1897. He was buried after 14 Nov 1878 in Bellevue City Cemetery. No Marker. He was also known as Caswell Kidwell Shay. I've always understood the Shays were Scotch Irish. shay is the Scotch spelling of the name. I believe the Irish spelling is Shea. And for some reason I think there is some connection with Kentucky in the background. I think Grandma Shay was born in Louisville in 1842, and married Grandpa Shay in 1856 or '58. In the notes Aunt Irene gave me once her name is given as either Mary Burke or Mary Andersen. If her name was mary Burke her name would be the same as Granma dunns. She died March 31, 1897. Grandpa Shay died Nov. 14, 1878. I'm quite sure they were Episcopalian as that's the church our Mother went to when young. Parents: David SHAY and Phebe CATHCART .

Highly Respected Resident Succumbs to Heart Attack Monday Evening

Another home was saddened Monday __________________________________ suddenly taken from her loved ones at her home on Fourth street at 8:30 o'clock. Mrs. Dunn had been having frequent slight heart attacks for several weeks but for a couple of days had been feeling much better and Monday had been exceptionally well, but was taken suddenly ill an hour previous to her death.

The funeral was held this afternoon the services being conducted at the home at 2 o'clock by the Rev. C. Vin White, pastor of the Presbyterian church, assisted by a choir composed of Mrs. M. G. Hyler, Mrs. W. G. Stuart, Lester J. Gaylor and William Henneger. The pallbearers escorting the casket to the last resting place in the Presbyterian cemetery were Douglas Taylor Sr., George Gurius, George Schaub, Ben Dagits, Fred Adickers and August Kloft.

Grace Shay, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Shay was born in Bellevue, December 29, 1868 and spent her entire life in this city. Her marriage to Corneilus Dunn took place January 26, 1888. To this union was born six children, five of whom with her devoted husband are left heartbroken by their irreparable loss. They are J. C. Dunn, Racine Wis.; Norman Dunn and Mrs. A. F. Abing, Dubuque; Mrs. Wm. Matthews of Bellevue and Miss Irene Dunn at home. She also leaves six grandchildren, one brother, Charles Shay, Wagner, S. D. and one sister Mrs. Henry Janson of Dubuque. Mrs. Joseph Schwartz, a daughter preceded her mother in death.

The passing of Mrs. Dunn leaves her home desolate as her interests always centered in the family circle and her first thought was for the happiness and comfort of those she held dear. Her neighbors will miss her too, for at her door everyone was given a cheery greeting and she was always the first to go to a friend or neighbor in trouble. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.


MRS. CON DUNN DIED SUDDENLY YESTERDAY
Victim Had Been Feeling Well Until Shortly Before Death

Friends were shocked when it became known that Mrs. Con Dunn had died suddenly at her home on South Fourth street Monday evening at 8:30. While Mrs. Dunn had not been in her usual health for some time, she seemed to be feeling much better and spent a greater part of Monday in the yard, chatting with her husband as he was preparing the garden.

Grace Shay was born in Bellevue December 29, 1868, and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kedwell Shay and spent her entire life in our midst. She was united in marriage with Con ________________________________________ mourn ______________________ ing wife and m________________________ Dunn of Racine, ______________________ Mrs. A. F. Abing of Dubuque, Mrs. William Mathews and Miss Irene Dunn of Bellevue. Also surviving are six grandchildren, one brother, Charles Shay of Wagner, S. D. and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Jansen of Dubuque. One daughter, Mrs. Joseph Schwartz precede her mother in death. her devotion to her home and home ties was exceptional and her happiness was gratified is her association with her family circle and this wonderful memory is their heritage. Her neighbors will miss her timely assistance and words of cheer in time of trouble for she always was ready to lend a helping had.

Funeral services will held Thursday afternoon form the home ________________________ She was buried after 9 Apr 1934 in Presbyterian Cemetery, Bellevue, Jackson Co., Iowa. She was Episcopalian. From Aunt Alice to Peggy: My Mother (Grandma Dunn) was a pretty good singer. She and my Aunt Minne used to sing duets. She used to play piano (Chording) and play and sing old folk songs to us and our frineds. It's a shame none of us tried to learn the songs. My Grandpay Shay played the violin.
