DIED: Anderson - At his home in Monmouth Township on Monday, January 8, of old age, Mr. Joseph Anderson, aged 80 years, 4 months, and 15 days.
Joseph Anderson was born in Bally Dugan County Down, Ireland, in August 24, 1803, and came to America at the age of 18. In 1840 he came from Ohio to Iowa and has been a resident of Jackson County most of the time since. He was a skilled mill-wright and superintended the construction of many of the mills of this county and surrounding country. He was a fine old gentleman of extensive information. he leaves a widow and ten children, one of his sons, Joseph residing in Maquoketa. His death was sudden and peculiar. He felt well and went out of doors after having spent the morning hours reading the IRISH WORLD, and proceeded to clean the snow from the walks, when a few moments later his wife found him lying dead upon the ground. The doctors were of the opinion that he was completely worn out and died of old age and sheer exhaustion. He was buried after 8 Jan 1884 in Waterford Cemetery, Buckhorn City, Jackson Co., Iowa. The nearest approach to a colony we find from Indiana are from Hendricks, Putnam and Morgan counties, near Indianapolis. They begin with the Flathers brothers--Edward, Thos. S., Willis, and William, in 1842; Joseph Anderson, 1848; Jesse Ellis, 1852; and William Ellis.
They all came from the same neighborhood in Hendricks county, were all related; and had all come from Kentucky to Indiana. George Roush and family, 1854, from Wabash county, and John Woods, in 1850, from Rush county. The latter's brother, Colonel Joseph Jackson Wood, a West Point graduate, came here in 1853, after his resignation from the regular army.

He next visited his brother William, who had secured a piece of land about one mile west of Fulton with his land warrant received for service in the war of 1812. He had fought with Jackson at New Orleans. He came to Iowa several years prior to our coming and had the pick of the country, but had settled on about as poor a tract as could well be found. Needless to say, my father did not like the land in that neighborhood. He visited with Willis, William and Edward Flathers, and Jos. Anderson, all relatives, and all living within a few miles of each other, within the forks of the Maquoketa River, and finally purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in section II, South Fork township, on which he remained until hsi death in 1889.

William Franklin Anderson, son of Joseph and Belinda Anderson, was born Nov. 25th, 1872 in Maquoketa, Iowa, where he grew up and was educated in the Maquoketa schools At the age of 16 years, he united with the Baptist church.

His father died in 1890. He was united in marriage with Miss Estella Barclay July 11th 1900. Eleven years ago Frank and his wife moved to Iowa City where they resided until his death which occurred Oct. 9, 1914.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Estella Anderson, his mother, Mrs. Belinda Anderson of Maquoketa and a sister Mrs. Isabella Wright of Passadena, Calif, and several aunts and cousins.

The remains were brought to Maquoketa Saturday and taken to the residence of Mr. Silas Barclay on North Otto street, where the funeral was held Sunday at two p. m. with interment in Mt. Hope cemetery, the Baptist minister officiating.

Frank Anderson was for many years a pupil of the Maquoketa High school and was a general favorite with all his former schoolmates being very proficient in local theatricals and especially gifted as a black face comedian as will be remembered by visitors to the old Stephens opera house. He was buried after 9 Oct 1914 in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa. Parents: Joseph ANDERSON Jr. and Belinda PETERS.
