ELEVENTH GENERATION


1988. Thomas CARLETON (1) was born on 3 Apr 1636 in Cumberland Co., England near Little Salkeld. He died on 16 Nov 1684 in Ballinacarrick, County Wicklow, Ireland. He has Ancestral File number HRMD-FX. Thomas Carlton was born on April 3, 1636, near Little Salkeld, Cumberland County, England, the son of John and Elinor Carleton. He was a farmer like his father much of his life, but with respect to his religious views he early became a convert to the Quaker denomination, actually becoming an "eminent minister" of the Society. In 1663 he was sentenced to several years in prison for non-payment of the church tithes - the State Tax that was levied on everyone to support the State Church of England, regardless of their denominatinal preference.

On May 23, 1669 in Grenay Cragg, Cumberland County, England, Thomas married Isabell (Isabella) Mark (e), daughter of Thomas Mark(e) of Mosedale, of that County. They lived first at Mosedale where their first son, Marke was born, but then moved to Ballinacarrick, Counjty Wicklow, Ireland about 35 or 40 miles south of Dublin, which they made their permanent home. Four additional children were born to them there.

While in Ireland, Thomas Carleton wrote several works, one of which was entitled "The Captive's Complaint", printed in 1668. A list of this and other works is given in Joseph Smith's Catalog I. According to William Stockdale in his book "A Great Cry of Oppression", page 252, "Thomas Carleton of Ballynacarge, County Wicklow, received one pewter dish and one brass pan valued at 6s,3d, for "repairing the parish Worship-House at Rathdrum.

Thomas Carleton died at his home in Ballinacarrick, County Wicklow, Ireland on November 16, 1684, his wife Isabell apparantly outliving him until 1698. Her will was probated that year in Ballylekin, Kings County, Ireland. He was married to Isabell (Isabella) MARKE on 23 May 1669 in Grenay Cragg, Cumberland Co. England.

1989. Isabell (Isabella) MARKE (1) was born in 1638 in Cumberland Co., England in Mosedale. bet 1636 & 1640 She was christened on 8 Dec 1638 in Dacre, Cumberland, England. She was buried in May 1698 in Edenderry, Offaly, Ireland. She died on 6 May 1698 in Ballylekin, Kings, Ireland. She has Ancestral File number HRMD-G4. Children were:
