FIFTH GENERATION
30. Cornelius G. MARTIN
(22)
(23) was born in 1803 in Virginia. His granddaughter Victoria Martin
Burson gives his middle name as Calvin, while his father's will clearly shows
the middle initial "G". The "G" could have been copied in
error or Victoria may have confused her grandfather's name with that of her uncle
Cornelius Calvin Martin, born 1854. She also gives his birth year as 1803.
He was a Farmer in 1860 in Henry County, GA.(24)
Owned land worth $800 and personal property of $412. Lived next door
to Newton Monroe South and wife Nancy. He was married to Susannah (Susan) Hamby
JENNINGS on 5 Mar 1831 in Oglethorpe County, GA.
(25)(26) Either 1831 or 1832,
secondary sources differ. Need to resolve by checking Oglethorpe County, GA
marriage records. These are on microfilm in the GA Archives Bldg. in Atlanta.
(I have a copy showing the entry for March 5, but the year is not shown on
that page.) Jennings book shows 1831, Martin book shows 1832!
31. Susannah (Susan) Hamby JENNINGS
(27) was born in 1813 in Georgia.(28)
Victoria Martin Burson gives Susannah's birth date as 1813 and states
that she died at the age of 72 in 1890, which is inconsistent, casting doubt
on the accuracy of this data. However, At some point her age of "72"
could have been a mistranscription of "77." That would be consistent
with 1813 to 1890 lifespan. Other records show her birth date as 1815. Her
name appears as Susannah in her husband's will and in the marriage record (Oglethorpe
County), but as Susan in the notes of her granddaughter Victoria Martin Burson.
Only the latter shows the middle name of Hamby. One wonders if "Susan
Hamby" was a corruption of "Susannah," as remembered or passed
down to her granddaughter.
Victoria Burson writes, "She was the sweetest Grandmother anybody ever had.
She died at 72 and was well preserved -- good looking and a devoted Christian.
Not a grey hair in her head when she died in 1890." (As noted elsewhere,
the age and year of death appear to be inaccurate.) Her Christian character
is also witnessed to in her husband's will where he credits his wife's influence
for his own conversion after their marriage.
The Documented Notes on Jennings and Allied Families by Beatrice Mackey Doughtie
(Atlanta Archives) p.881 shows a second Susannah Jennings married to George Huddleston
on 8 July 1818 in Oglethorpe County (A-264). Given the birth date of 1815, this
could not be our Susannah, but could be related (a namesake aunt?). A Kizeah
Jennings is also listed as married in 1826 and could be a namesake for Susannah's
daughter Kizeah. Children were:
i. James

Burson lists her name as Kaziah Elizabeth. Other references give the name as

on 26 Jul 1835 in Georgia.(13) He died
