4. John SOUTH was born on 31 May 1796 in Laurens Co. SC.⁽⁴⁾ He was a Farmer in 1860 in Henry County, GA.⁽⁵⁾ Owned land worth $5,925 and personal property of $15,025 in 1860. He died on 30 Jan 1891 in Henry County, Georgia.

He was married to Penelope HARWELL (daughter of Mark HARWELL and Penelope JOHNSON) on 29 Dec 1825 in Ogelthorpe County, GA. Penelope HARWELL⁽⁶⁾ died before 1860 in Henry County, GA.⁽⁷⁾ She is not listed with John South and children on the 1860 census. John SOUTH and Penelope HARWELL had the following children:

14 i. John_N(ewton) W(inston) Marion SOUTH was born on 27 Apr 1833. He was a Teacher in 1860 in Henry County, GA.⁽⁸⁾ "TeacherComSchool" He died on 26 Sep 1902 in Henry County, GA.

17 iv. Robertus SOUTH was born about 1846 in Henry County, GA. ⁽⁹⁾ Listed on 1860 Census, but not in John South's will. Presume he died before his father without children.
18 v. Frances B. A. SOUTH was born in 1851 in Henry County, GA. ⁽¹⁰⁾ She was 9 years old and in school on the 1860 census.
