| Jacob Kuhn |
Jacob Anselm (James)Kuhn (son of Johann Kuhn and Margarethe Greff) was born April 21, 1836 in Bliesransbach, Kreis Saarbruecken, Dioc. Trier Prussia, and died November 30, 1898 in St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. He married Margaret Getz, daughter of Adam Getz and Mary Beck.
Notes for Jacob Anselm (James)Kuhn:
Jacob (sometimes referred to as James) was born in Bliesranbach a little village outside of Saarbruechen in Prussia (Germany) almost on the French boundary line. His father was a schoolmaster.
At the age of 12, rather than complete his education in Europe, he left Paris, where he had been studying for a short time, and sailed to America.
He studied first at Davenport, Iowa, but later entered the Cleveland Seminary, from which he graduated some years previous to his ordination as a priest, in 1863.
After his ordination he had charge of various parishes, among them being Norwalk, Mansfield, Newburg, and finally what is now St. Edward's parish of Cleveland. In March of 1879, he was sent from that parish to St. Mary's church in Massillon, Ohio, and remained there until his death.
At one time in his life, Jacob was a printer. While in Cleveland he acted as the editor of The Columbia. He always retained in his possession his printer's stick and various other mementos of the days he spent at the case, and it is needless to say that all were highly prized by him.
Fr. Kuhn inherited his remarkable will power & manifold abilities from his parents, who are described as having both been people of great strength of mind & rare intelligence. Both parents died at the old homestead in Germany.
Fr. Kuhn's only living relatives at the time of his death were a brother, Herman(Nikolaus?) Kuhn, the distinguished editor of Le Monde, one of the greatest of Parisian journals; and a niece who was residing in Tiffin, Ohio.
Fr. Kuhn was very highly regarded in the Massillon community. He died at St. Vincent's Charity hospital in Cleveland, Ohio but his body was returned to Massillon by train and the whole town turned out for the funeral. He is buried in St. Mary cemetery behind the church.
