Darwin A. Brewer (b. 1879, d. November 30, 1957)

Notes for Darwin A. Brewer:
Although only 17 years old, Darwin bought a small general store in Yellow Springs (for only $150) in order to support his mother and sister. The store located on Xenia Ave. where Koklbagen's store was later known. While growth made larger quarters desirable, the present Yellow Springs Market building was built for him. He operated this general store for about 30 years. At one time he had a grocery in connection with the Adams Bakery in the building until recently occupied by The Lemon Tree. Later, with Mrs. Inez Diehl and his wife, he reopened The Tavern which had been a tavern in the days of coach travel, but had been closed for fifty years.
Many Yellow Springs associate the Brewer family with the well-known octagon house at 131 W. Whiteman St. where they lived for 37 years. Failing health forced the family's removal to the ground floor apartment on Xenia Ave. where he was living at the time of his death.
Darwin was an active member of the Yellow Springs Methodist Church, serving terms on the official board, as treasurer, and as Member of the choir. He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge, from which he received his 50 year pin in January of 1957. He was a charter member of Antioch Chapter No. 445, Order of Eastern Star.
Darwin was 78 years of age.
