 Includes NotesNotes for Luke Nevius:
I have different accounts for Luke: These accounts sound like the same man except for the 10 year difference in the birth & baptism dates. Since I haven't been able to prove or disprove either account, I am assuming that they are the same person.

1. Luke was born July 10, 1772. Luke came West in a covered wagon around 1838. He helped in the building of the Little Miami Railroad between Springfield and Yellow Springs, Ohio. Luke died September 24, 1863 in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He was 81 years of age. (This account came from Dick Miller, Luke's ggg grandson who has been to Luke's grave.)

2. Luke Nevius, b. ca1772, son of Martin Nevius & wife Ann Voorhees, b1754. Martin was son of Lucas Nevius & Mettje Cornell. He died in 1785, & Ann m. (2) John Powelson 1786. Ann was dau. of John Voorhees & Anne Garretson. Ann & Martin lived in Harlingen, NJ.
The following was in a suit brought by Luke & his sister & her husband, Jonathon Porter saying the children had been stripped of their inheritance: They said that Luke, at age 3, was placed with his grandmother until about age 9, then sent to his stepfather, Powelson, who took him for 9 pounds per year & labor. Powelson kept him hard at work for a year, then sent him to his uncle. John Nevius, who kept him hard at work for a year, then returned him to Powelson. He was then bound out to trade as a shoemaker but given little education.
Reply by John Powelson & heirs of John Nevius: John & Ann supported Luke with food & clothing from April 1790 to August 1792. He was bound out by his stepfather for 3 years - stayed 18 months, was kept in the kitchen. Stepfather took him back & then Luke ran away. His mother then bound him out to Cornelius Voorhees, a shoemaker, who sold his time to Uriah deHart. The administrators settled up with Luke September 3, 1803. No further information on Luke. (This account came from the book: The Van Voorhees Family in America").

3.. Luke, s. of Martin, was baptized August 7, 1777 at Millstone, NJ. Married Jemima DeHart. He resided, first at Ten-Mile-Run, NJ; while there was a Chosen Freeholder of Somerset co. (as late as 1828); subsequently removed West. (This account came from the book: Joannes Nevius and his Descendants)
