Includes NotesMarriage Notes for Pieter Johannes Nevius and Jannetje "Jonica" Roelofse Schenck:
It is supposed that there were three other children, names unknown, born subsequent to 1704, because at various times after that date Peter Nevius paid fees to the Flatlands Church for "use of the pall". There is a family tradition in one line of Peter's descendants (the line from Cornelius) that there were fourteen children in all. The case of Aeltje is a very peculiar one. The facts are these: In the Van Voorhees Family Book, p.50, it is stated that "Altie Van Voorhees", dau. of Steven Courte Van Voorhees was the wife of an Albert Terhunen. Neither date of her birth nor her death appear, but it is stated she married Oct. 17, 1708, and their children are given, and that he died 1721. On the contrary in the will of Albert Terhunen, dated April 11, 11721, prob. in New York City December 19, 1722, (Lib. 9 of Wills, p.273) is the following clause: "I do constitute and appoint my loving wife, Aeltie Terhunen, and my father, John Terhunen, and my father-in-law, Peter Nevius, and my brother Roeloff Terhunen, and my brother-in-law Koert Voorhies, to be my Executors," etc. If the will was correct, "Aeltie Terhunen" was the daughter of Peter Nevius. If the Van Voorhees book is correct, the will was erroneous. Because of the doubt the Aeltje listed has not been carried forward as a Nevius in her proper place in the book: "Joannes Nevius and his Descendants".
The reason why the dates of birth of the children listed cannot be told accurately is because of the loss of the baptismal records of the Flatlands Church.
