Anna Kastelic (b. June 21, 1867, d. May 2, 1941)
Anna Kastelic977 was born June 21, 1867 in Bobna Gora/Nova Mesto, Jugo Slavia/Austria/Slovenia978, 979, and died May 2, 1941 in LaSalle, Illinois/ Age 73980. She married Anton Kastello on February 13, 1881 in Yugoslavia981, 982.
Notes for Anna Kastelic:
April 2005
I wish I could have known this woman. She stayed behind in Slovenia with 4 children when her husband immigrated in 1889-1890. She made the journey in 1899 with 4 children, lost the baby Franz shortly after they arrived here, and then proceeded to have 3 more children, Jennie, Louis and the last being Matthew Kastello, Mike's father. Jennie is the child who dies of tuberculosis at age 15.
At one time on the census she lists her occupation as running a boarding house on 747 LaFayette St. Of course, this really just meant they took in boarders.
Matthew (my father-in-law) married Eva very late, 31, even though they dated many years, because he lived with his parents, Anna & Anton, supported & took care of them and couldn't afford to get married.
Granddaughter Babe Faleskin Stachowiak recalls Anna always putting a teaspoon of sugar in her beer. Babe was told her grandparents had to go through a lot to get married because of Anna's last name being the same (Kostelic?).
According to Babe, Anna is supposed to have a brother ? Costello, with sons Frank, etc. This could relate to an earlier note (no documentation) that Anna had three brothers, Frank Kastelic, Yugoslavia; Ignatz Kastelic, NM; John Kastelic, LaSalle. Would be helpful to find these guys.
Also, these Frank Kostelics were the ones who changed their names to Costello and pretended to be Irish. In LaSalle, IL, at that time, the Irish were much higher on the rung than the Italians, and most certainly the Slovenians. Babe confirms when she grew up most all the teachers were Irish, a much earlier immigration to LaSalle than the Italians & Slovenian. She says they frequently knocked off a letter here and there, or changed the spelling to the way they felt it should be.
1900 Census:
Toney & Annie (sp) Kastello living on Second St. LaSalle with children Mary, Annie & Toney ( all born in the old country). Anna is 39 born June 1862 (tombstone says 1867); Toney in 1860, ages 39 & 40, so there is a disparity in ages between this and 1920 census. She lists 4 births, 3 alive at that time. This must have been Franz, who was 4 when they arrived in 1899.
1920 Census:
In 1920 Anna Kastelo (sp) is 56, (Puts birth at 1864) living on Syracuse St. in LaSalle with husband Anton 61 (age spread 5 years) and sons Louis 18 and Matthew 15, the two youngest sons and only two sons born in the US. Matt's sister Jennie dies in 1916, so she is absent from this census. Place of birth YUGOSLAVIA; heritage Slovenia. She is a "keeper of a boarding house" (this is 747 LaFayette St.) and has 3 boarders at this time.
1930 Cenus:
Tony & Anna Kostello (sp) still living on LaFayette; ages 72 & 69 so that puts her at 1861. Married when she was 19 and he 21. If they were married in 1883 she would have been born in 1864. Slovenian spoken in the home.
Husband Anton died in 1941 and Anna died a few short months later. I think they had very little in the way of money and had to rely on son Matthew in their old age to take care of debts and just simply to live. They were married 60 years shortly before their deaths.
Anna was also very active in the Mothers' Society of St. Roch's Catholic Church in LaSalle and the Holy Family Society and the Slovenian Women's Union Number 24. One of our great photos is of Anna with the Slovenia Ladies Union. She was a peanut of a women and looked very severe. (Who wouldn't?)
It seems such a shame we know so little about Mike's grandparents. They died before he was born and his family simply didn't talk much about them. They must have been very interesting people with wonderful stories to pass on. I personally would love to know how Anna supported 4 children while Anton was in the US, and then how she made her way to Havre, France with them to sail on the LaNormandie.
Locating this passenger manifest in 2005 has been truly one of my greatest finds since beginning my genealogy work. It has been a mystery in Mike's family and at least most of the puzzle is solved. We still can't locate Grietuffan, which she lists as last residence.
Questions:
The supposed three brothers, John Kastelic, LaSalle, Frank Kastelic, Yugoslavia, Ignatz Kastelic, New Mexico.
WHEN WAS THIS WOMAN BORN???
Where is Grietuffan?
