Notes for Anton J. Kastello:
April 2005
Anton is Matthew's oldest brother, born in Nova Mesto "new town" Jugo Slavia. He came through Ellis Island with his mother Anna and sisters Mary & Annie in 1899. Anton's family is the one that went to Cleveland area. See attached clippings re: Agnes Kananen and sons for possible info.
Their marriage took place in LaSalle County, IL in 1907. They are still there in the 1910 census but have moved to Cleveland after his marriage by the 1920 census. His children are still there.
By the 1930 census I can't find Anton but his ex-wife Josephine is living still in the Cleveland area, remarried to Joseph Ferl and they have 4 children. I think he must have come back to LaSalle by then but I can't find him.
When he divorced he came back home to Anton & Anna Kastello's house and never remarried. He eventually went back to the Cleveland area to be close to his children. He is buried there.
A 1992 note from his daugher Agnes Kostello Kananen to Babe Faleskin Stachowiak (1st cousins)
"Years after my father died, a Cleveland Publication, "The Evakoprovnst" had an editorial, a tribute to him. It said he could have died (wish I had it) a millionaire had he been dishonest.
"He was a Justice of the Peace, had an office in the bank, but was never paid. A kind, gentle man, as I remember him. Grandpa's wit," (referring to Anton Sr., Mike's grandfather) "like Uncle Mattie," (Mike's Dad) "treasured memories."
Babe also recalls her Uncle Tony had a great sense of humor.
The following is another part of the card written by Agnes Kastello Kananen to Babe.
"I remember Louise'' (Faleskin) daughter of Anna Kastello, " and Frances" (Kastello) Anton Jr.'s daughter,-- so Agnes is talking about her sister Frances and Babe's sister Louise, all first cousins, Anton & Anna being brother & sister, "like twins in resemblance and personality.
"Her (Frances) three children and families live in the Cleveland area. She is buried in Ft. Myers, FL. Husband remarried and also passed away.
"Our John lives in Erie, PA, pacemaker, etc. My eye sight is failing. Will be 80. Have to expect anything. Have treasured memories of LaSalle. Will send you my poetry. Lived alone 5 years, hate it. Flew to DC Thanksgiving. Live like a hermit.
"Ron (Kananen, Agnes's son) is a lawyer in DC. Dr. Gerald (Kananen, Agnes's son) at the Army base. Wasn't Dr. Michael (Kastello, my husband) a Camp David, (Ft. Detrick) veterinarian? Grandson Brian has a degree in Criminal Justice."

Phoned Ron Kananen in DC at his law office 202-955-3750 and left message. Couldn't find a Gerald Kananen listed in Cleveland area, but left a message at 440-593-1439 Kananen, and talked live to 440-593-1850, Agnes Kastello Kananen's sister-in-law. (Didn't get her name-legally blind and a bit difficult to speak with)
She told me Agnes had a full brother last name Ferl, still living, but couldn't remember his first name. I got a number of listings for Ferl; George, Joseph, R. & Richard.
I called Joseph Ferl 440-593-5130 (this is the second family of Josephine Jerse Kastello Ferl. I spoke to Joanne & Joe Ferl. Joseph is Agne's half brother. Joanne told me Agnes' full brother was John Kastello Ferl, who was in his 80's, in Erie, PA (name was changed but we don't know if it was legal adoption or if they just went by the Terl last name). Joseph says his mother Agnes came from Zagreb, which is actually in Croatia. Ron & Gerald Kananen would be Joseph & John's nephews.
I guess they don't want anything to do with us. Of course, their grandfather Tony probably didn't play much of a role in their lives with their grandmother remarrying Ferl.
