Mary Kastello (b. November 20, 1886, d. February 15, 1969)
Mary Kastello (daughter of Anton Kastello and Anna Kastelic)1368 was born November 20, 1886 in Austria (Dobrnic) (Carniola)1369, 1370, 1371, and died February 15, 1969 in Kansas. She married (1) Anton Perme on January 19, 1903 in LaSalle, LaSalle County, IL1372, son of Anton Perme and Marija Matos. She married (2) Frank Matic on Bet. 1909 - 1910. She married (3) Joe Tersina/Tersiner on 19101373, 1374, 1375.
Notes for Mary Kastello:
March 2005
Mary is the sister of Matthew F. Kastello, Sr. These are our Kansas relatives. Phoned Josephine Christman 9-9-94, Mary's daughter who lives with her in Frontenac, Kansas. 316-232-1632, 121 S. Wright, 66762. Michael and I drove through Frontenac to visit these relatives in approximately 1972 with 2 of our young children, Andrew & Jennifer.
Mary came to this country when she was five years old (according to daughter Josephine) and to Kansas in 1910, supposedly when she married Joe Tersiner. But according to census records, her mother Anna and their then three children Tony, Mary & Annie, didn't immigrate until 1899, which would make Mary 13 when she came over. So I don't know if we just have a recollection that's incorrect or maybe she meant she was 5 when her father (Anton) left for US.
According to info on her sister Annie Kastello Faleskin, Annie immigrated when she was 9 (born in 1889) so this fits census records indicating the 1889 immigration.
Have located on Ellis Island website the immigration date of 1899 for Anna and the three children Tony, Annie & Mary (Maria). They sailed on 12 Aug 1899 on the La Normandie out of Havre, France, arriving 8-21-1899. See mother Anna's file for details. Also listed on the manifest was a boy named Franz, age 4, of whom we have not a clue. Is this a brother & what happened to him? There has been no mention of a Franz in the family.
According to my father-in-law, Mary's younger brother, she walked a bit on the wild side. She left for Chicago at a young age, married first husband Anton Perme in LaSalle 19 Jan 1903, at age 17. We assume he is the father of Leo (who in subsequent records went by the last name Tersiner--Mary's 3rd husband), b. 3 Jan 1908. He is listed in the census records as the oldest of the Tersiner children and the only one born in IL & not KA as the rest of their children were. Don't know if Joseph Tersiner adopted him or not. Mary married Joe Tersiner in 1910 when she was 24 and that's also when she came to Kansas.
Received documents 3-10-05 from LaSalle County on her first marriage to Anton Perme, 19 Jan 03 and birth certificate of son "Frank" Perme 3 Jan 1908. Also received SS record on "Leo" Tersina (Tersiner) who is the child who shows up in all the census records, born 3 Jan 1908. In his SS record Leo has the last name Tersina (Tersiner) but we don't know if Joe Tersiner adopted him or he just took on that last name. Leo and Frank must be the same person.
Curiously, on his birth certificate he is listed as the 3rd child born to the Permes. No idea who the first two children were, whether they died, were adopted, what? She was 17 or 18 when they married and if she was indeed "on the wild side" one might suspect they had to get married, but we have no record of any children prior to Frank/Leo who was born 5 years after they were married.
She must have divorced Anton Perme about 1909 because in the 1910 census she is in LaSalle, married to her second husband Frank Matic. It indicates they've been married zero years, step-son Leo Perme is living with them and she has had 3 births, 3 live children. Best guess is Anton Perme took the older two children, could have gone to Wisconsin (possibilities in IGI records) and Leo stayed with her. They must not have been married long if she married Joe Tersiner in 1910 and moved to Kansas and had their first child in 1911. Josephine says her mother Mary was a wonderful wife and mother.
***Check IGI hits for Anton Perme 16 oct 1905, Frances Perme 28 Mar 1902 & Joseph Perme 6 Sept 1905 as possibly the older 2 sibilings of Leo. They're all Wisconsin but no further information like parents listed.
