Notes for Annie Kastello:
April 2005
Annie Kastello Faleskin, daughter of Anton and Anna Kastelic Kastello, came to the States when she was 9. (This fits census dates of immigration of her mother Anna of 1899).
Anne "Babe" Stachowiak is Anna's granddaughter and one of the few living relatives on that side of the family. Most of what follows are her recollections.
Annie's parents, Anton & Anna, at that time had a boarding house, as well as a tavern, and one of the older boarders wanted to marry her-- or her parents wanted her to marry him. She had no interest in this relationship at all. Hence, when a young man from Yugoslavia named Ignatz, moved into town and began working at the tavern where Annie helped out, a romance quickly developed and they were married shortly thereafter. Annie was only 15. Gasp! She lied on her marriage certificate and said she was 18.
Annie's mother either threatened or did throw all her clothes on the street for doing something so foolish. She was particularly senstive about this subject, I think, because Annie's sister Mary had had some romance problems prior to this, some unwanted pregnancies and marriages, so it's understandable.
Her husband Ignatz had apparently been studying to be a priest but had a change of heart and came to the US when he was only 20. He worked in the Kastello tavern and went into the mines, which is where he developed Black Lung or "miner's disease" as they called it. At one point he was trapped in the mines for two days. He died at age 35, making Anna a widow at age 29, with 6 children to care for, ages 12 on down to Babe who was born shortly after his death.
Their firstborn son, Ignatius, died at age 10 from dyptheria. Annie washed dishes at the tavern at night and son Rudy, 10, peddled papers and emptied waste baskets at a bank to help out after his father died.
Annie and the children lived on the south side (the "wrong" side ) of the tracks. They knew and played with Eva (to be my mother-in-law), Pearl, & Gladys Rimmele (who also lived on the "wrong" side of the tracks. Maybe my father-in-law Matthew Kastello met Eva while visiting his sister Annie. Who knows?
At some point Annie began to see a gentleman by the name of Mr. Brennan, a rather prominent figure. He wanted to marry her but did like to gamble, so I don't know if that's the reason she declined the offer. But he apparently took her all over with him in his travels and he at one point was a mayor.
