Notes for James "Jens" Peter Mauritzen:
April 2006
James "Jens" Mauritzen (also sp. Mauritson on his son Harry's birth cert. & Mauritsen on his marriage certificate) was born in Ronne on the Island of Bornholm, Denmark, (See birth cert. of Harry Mauritzen in file) and immigrated to America in 1870 according to the 1900 census and/or 1869, according to his death certificate.
He was a shoemaker in Denmark and he owned a shoemaking shop on Water Street in Peru, Illinois, all his life. This was how he supported his family. As far as we know their only family home was the one on 4th & Plum in Peru, where all 6 children were born and where James' nephews came to live when his sister Carrie died, and where his sisters, my Aunt Margaret and Aunt Mayme raised them; also where Mayme and Margaret, who never married, died.
I never knew my great grandfather, but I remember visiting that family home many, many times when only his daughters, my great aunts Mayme and Margaret remained. I also remember having to play Christmas carols on the old upright when I was probably 9 or 10.
According to Gr. Aunt Margaret, her father James married his first wife in Denmark and they had two daughters; Adel, who died in infancy, and Jennie. The story has always been that he was widowed in Denmark and came to the US with Jennie when she was 4.
My search reveals he married his first wife Jennie Johnson in 1871 in Illinois and so Adel and Jennie were born here. I can't find anything on Adel but of course Jennie was raised by James' second wife Johanne, whom he married in 1877.
He married Johanna (Jennie on her son Harry's birth certificate) Pederson, also from Denmark but the Isle of Lolland, near the Isle of Bornholm, where James was born. We don't know if they knew each other in Denmark or if they met when she immigrated. Marriage certificate confirms James was 33 and Johanna was 29 when they were married by a "Minister of the Gospel."
There may be some further information in Bureau County, IL. My Aunt Lois says they used to visit people there frequently when she was little girl and have lots of picnics. There was a large group of people from Denmark who lived there and had come to work on the railroad. She remembers visiting a woman they called Tante (Aunt) Leonard who was mother of "Aunt Ag" (Agnes). Tante was very kind to Lois and taught her how to drink tea--with lots of sugar. She would say, "Now, let's have a cup of tea together."
My mother discovered recently while looking through her Aunt Mayme's Bible that Tante Anna was James' sister. It read, "Presented to Maymie by my dear Aunt Annie Leonard." She and her daughter Agnes came to live at the Mauritzen family home but Lois isn't sure why. She thinks they were having a hard time making a living.
After her husband died, Tante Anna worked in a laundry under very severe conditions in order to support her child. " Aunt Ag" went on to marry Frank McMenamin and moved to Chicago. They say her mother remained in the Mauritzen home until she died. However, 1900 census shows Anna is a widow, 43, immigrated in 1880 and lives with daughter Agnes, 18 in Chicago. Can't seem to find anything on Anna Leonard.

Discrepancies:
I have sent a request for documents in Cook County (4-8-03) for Jennie's marriage & death certificate, as well as birth cert. of Louise, her daughter. Maybe they will shed some light on the situation.
Why can't I find them in pre 1900 census anywhere?
