Includes NotesNotes for John (Jean) David Doerr, Jr.:
March 2003

John and his 5 siblings were all born in the US., Peru, Ill. He is listed in the 1870 Census as age 4, the fifth of six children born to John & Louisa. He married Lena Hochguertel in 1886 after she immigrated, and they had four children, one of which was my dear grandmother Charlotte Doerr Maurtizen. The marriage certificate confirms John (sp. Dorr) was 21 when they married and was a cigar maker at the time. Lena was 18 "nearly nineteen". The witnesses were Theresa Doerr, (the groom's sister) and Anton Hochguertel (either her brother or her father-I suspect her brother) and they were married by a justice of the peace in Peru.

John was apprenticed out as a cigar maker when he was 14, according to the 1880 census. Also living with the family at that time was John's grandfather Tomius Baumstach, 66; (spelling yet another version). John also owned a saloon at 4th & Schyler in Peru the last ten years of his life. He apparently got into trouble on the weekends while making his rounds for collections and having drinks with everyone. He was a good man except when drinking, and then he was abusive. He is listed in the 1900 Census as a bartender, along with his wife and 4 children and last listed in the 1910 Census, two years before his death. Charlotte told me (my grandmother) she remembers hiding under the kitchen table in fear of him on many occasions. He died from "the drink" at 46. He was buried in City Cemetary in Peru, 12-1-1912.

His Death Certificate lists his father as Michael Doerr as opposed to John Michael. Through subsequent searches I've determined that this was correct and his father was born in Baden-Wuerttenberg. Age at death has been transposed in his obituary: "John Doerr of Peru, Aged 64 (s/b 46) died at died at 6:00 o'clock last night at St. Mary's hospital after being confined one month with a complication of diseases. For ten years he ran a saloon at Fourth & Schuyler Streets in Peru. The funeral will be held at 2:00 o'clock tomorrow, with burial in the Peru City Cemetary." He was living on 7th St. in Peru, Il.
