Note: sp. Hochgurtel/hochguertel & on marriage license Doerr is spelled Dorr
According to 1900 1920 census and obituary, Lena came to the US in 1880 when she was 12 years old, with her parents, Anton & Anna Hochguertel. They first went to Peoria and then came to Peru by 1882. She must have met her husband John D. Doerr/Dorr, Jr. in Peru. They were married in 1886 when she was 18. Witnesses at the wedding were the groom's sister Thersia Dorr and Anton Hochguertel (either the bride's father or brother).
John Doerr ran a tavern and was a cigar maker. They had four children, my grandmother being one of them. John apparently had a bit of a problem with alcohol and after his collections on the weekends, would come home heavily under the influence and was frequently abusive. Gramma told me she remembers hiding under the kitchen table in fear of him. He died in his 40's.
Lena then married Carl Hoesch who had been a bartender for her husband and companion to Lena during her troubled marriage. Lena was reluctant to go out much, according to her grandaughter Lois Mauritzen Lunn, and whenever she did in later years, her daughter Charlotte had to talk her through it. She seemed to suffer from poor health, perhaps some depression, but it wasn't obvious to me that anything was wrong with her. Of course, she was elderly when I remember her, but she died when I was 12 and I often visited she & the man we called "Grampa Carl" Hoesch, with my mother & grandmother Charlotte Mauritzen. They both left the impression of being very quiet, gentle people. She died in her home at 710 Schuyler St. in Peru, at 92. She always had a parakeet, which is probably why I remember my grandmother always liking parakeets in her home. She became a US citizen.
From 3rd Cousin Craig Sale. "Obituary cites Alton-Sessen (Meaning Alten Essen) as place of birth. (On the Rhine River a few miles from Dusseldorf. 1920 Census cites Rhine Province as birthplace.
