Includes NotesNotes for Anton Josephus Hochguertel:
February 2003

According to 1900 census, Anton Hochguertel and Anna had 12 children, five living, one of whom was Lena Hochguertel who married John Doerr and whose daughter was Charlotte Doerr (my grandmother) who married Harry Maurtizen.

From Craig Sale (3rd cousin) Family settled in Peru by 1882.
Anton immigrated with his wife Anna in 1880. The family was very poor, had great hopes for their future in US but were very disappointed. Only child born in the US was Mamie in 1882. They were Catholic and were disillusioned by lack of support from the church. They were expected to pay for a family pew at St. Joseph's in Peru, IL. They could not afford one, so they had to stand at the back of the church during masses.
Daughter Anna was harshly treated by the nuns at St. Joseph's school and the family felt it was punishment for being poor. They eventually gave up Catholicism and had no church affiliation. He was naturalized on Oct 27, 1888 in Ottawa, Il. Witnesses were Henry Helmig and Henry J. Muller. (Book 11, page 324). Address appears in 1910 census as 8th St. Peru.
His wife Anna was still alive at the time of his death and the informant at death was son Robert. Cause of death of General Debility of 6 mon. duration. He was buried in City Cemetary in Peru.
According to obit of daugher Lena they came first to Peoria and then to Peru. Could find records?

Discrepancies:
(1) 1900 Census lists birthplace Germany, but Anton his father lists Prussia on his immigration papers; I think one in the same then.
(2) Death certificate reads birth date as June 14, 1840, not 1838 as on tombstone
(3) Obit indicates was born in Germany 68 years ago, but tombstone indicates he was 76 at his death.
(4) Can't locate immigration documents; only verification is census records for the date.
(5) Spelling on Charlotte Hochguertel Doerr's birth cert. is Hochgurtel
