Notes for Carl/Charles Hoesch:
March 2003
Carl came from Essen, Germany in 1842, according to 1930 census, to escape fighting under Keiser Wilhelm and became a naturalized citizen. He had lost several fingers as a boy when he and his brother were splitting wood and his brother's hand slipped with the saw. Most of the other family that came from Germany list Alten-Essen as place of origin. Alten means old, so I wonder if he lived in the "new" Essen.
"Grampa Carl" as his step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren called him, was a bartender for John Doerr, and later married his widow Lena when he was 44 according to to 1930 census. They were married many years. According to my Aunt Lois, her father, Harry Mauritzen, didn't particularly care for his mother-in-law's second husband Carl Hoesch. He thought Carl was lazy. Grampa often remarked that Carl was coming in the back door as John was going out the front door of Lena's.
He became a tailor, a strange profession for someone missing several fingers, and did work for Simpson Company in Peru, Illinois, going into homes and custom-making suits, as well as bar tending. I remember him fondly and was an adult when he died in a nursing home in LaSalle County and was buried in Peru Cemetary.
