Individual Record data on Family Search.com indicate his parents were both from Kur Hessen & Albrecht was born in Bavaria.
From the earliest census I can find on Albrecht, 1860, he lists his birth place as Hessen-D. Hessen is a state, the capitol is Wiesbaden, bounded by Bavaria in south, formed in 1945 with Hesse-Nassau, a former Prussian province and most of Hesse-Darmstadt, a former grand Duchy. In 1871 it joined the German Empire and continued on its own dynasty in until the German revolution in 1919.
Albreight was married to Elizabeth Burkhart Koehler. At the time he enlisted in the Civil Was to fight for the Union, Nov. 8, 1861, he had two small daughters and Elizabeth was pregnant with son Fred who was born 4 months later. They were then living in what would become the "family home ", a 2-family dwelling, until Elizabeth's death in 1918. Their son Leopold & his wife Lizzie had moved in and lived on the other side until they were well into having their 11 children, whereupon Leopold's family moved to the home between 12 & 13th Sts. (See Leopold Koehler Notes). Private Koehler served in CPT Cogswell Battery and CPT Ford's company of cavalry. He left Ottowa when they formed Chapman's Brigade Company, Cavalry of the 53rd. Then he was attached to the Company B. Dragoons. They formed Company K of the 15th Illinois Volunteer Company Cavalry under the command of CPT Ford. (see copy LaSalle County War Records in file)
He developed respitory problems during the war and was unable to go on the battlefield, but because of his training as a "druggist" he went behind the lines administering medicine to the wounded soldiers. He was assigned as a pharmacist clerk for Dr. McDonald on the Steamer Chancellor and later as a druggist on the Steamer Decatur.
He was at the Battle of Shiloh Church, among other sites. His diary contains a poem he wrote after walking the battlefield a few weeks after the Battle of Shiloh.
His own medical problem worsened and he was only able to serve one year before he was honorably discharged on a medical disability, Oct. 15, 1862. (We have copy of typed transcript of his diary in personal files)
After the War he continued in the pharmacy trade as a civilian. After reading his diary I concluded he was an honorable man and very devoted to his wife and children.
