Notes for Jacob Kastelic:
Never came to US.[KASTELLO FAMILY TREE.FBK.FTW]

We thought he never came to the US but sounds like he did, according to the following letter.
The following is excerpted from a letter to Dolores Kastello from Jenny & Joe Kastelic (Joe's father is Joseph Kastelic, John's brother).
"Joseph & John came to US at turn of century. Joseph was in Cleveland for some time before settling in Ely. John worked in mines in Ely a short time.
"In Depression John lived in Ely with his father (Jacob). Moved around a lot and would tell us (nephew Joe, wife Jennie) of his travels. Had a wife & children in Europe. He looked up Tom & Paul (nephews). He died in Illinois a few years later. Don't know when John Kastello was born." (It was 1872).
"They both probably came at the turn of the century. He did work in the mines once upon a time for a short period of time, a long time ago, then left.
"When we got married in 1933, it was the Depression and John was living here in Ely with Grandpa Kastelic. He didn't stay long. He moved around a lot and used to tell us of his travels. He was on the move a lot. He had a wife and children in Europe, I know.
"The next we heard of him was a few years back when Tom was still in West Allis. He went there from somewhere in Illinois and looked up Tom (his nephews) & Paul, I think. He died in Illinois a few years later. Tom & Paul might remember that. It seems to me they were notified, but I'm not sure.
"They had a sister Josephine Kastelic Kramar, who also came to Ely from Europe, but I don't know when. The birthdate on her tombstone is the Year 1882. Doesn't give the month or date. She died in 1961.
"We know that Joseph, John & Josephine also had a brother named Anton. Kuzzy remembers his father telling him that his father's name was Anton also. Mrs. Kramar used to tell about her brother Anton being with a circus and one time came through the town she was living in in Europe and they saw each other and he gave her a carnation. The next thing she heard was that the ship the circus was on, sunk, and assumed he went down with it, as that was the last time she heard anything about him. She described her brother Anton as a very tall, dark-complected man.
"In Europe every house or home had a name and theirs was Pintar. Kuzzy said he remembers Mrs. Kramar (Josephine)talking to his mother about a crippled sister named Palona, which I think would be Pauline in English, but I don't know if she was Grandpa Kastelic's sister or grandma's sister." (She's Joseph, John, Josephine's sister).
E-mail from Dolores Kastello 5-18-01 Information given to her by Jennie (Chuck's aunt in Ely).
"They brought Josephine Kastelic (one of 5 of Jacob's children) over from Europe. Josephine had a daughter out of wedlock before she came here. The girl's name was Frances. In Ely, MN, Josephine married a man by the name of John Kramar (Kramer?). They were not able to have any children, which was a sorrow to Josephine. (Jennie used to visit her). The daughter, Frances, married a man by the name of Norman Brown, who at one time was a postmaster in Ely, MN. Frances and norman moved to San Francisco and while there, they were divorced.
"After that, her daughter moved her back to Ely and she lived there until she passed away at 96-98 years of age. This was in the 1990's. Jennie also recalls there were still 1 Kastelic brother and 2 Kastelic sisters that did not come to the USA."
I wonder if the remaining brother was our Anton Kastello and since they assumed he died in the ship wreck . . . I don't know! Trying to figure out why Anton didn't join his father & siblings in MN instead of going to IL.
