Notes for John Kastelic:
From the Chuck & Dolores Kastellos-
John came to the US and later he sent for his wife & family. Family didn't like them so they returned to Slovenia. John could not. He died in Ill. in an old folks home.
The following is excerpted from a letter to Dolores Kastello from Jenny & Joe Kastelic (Joe's father is Joseph Kastelic, John's brother). "Joseph & John came to US at turn of century. Joseph was in Cleveland for some time before settling in Ely. John worked in mines in Ely a short time.
"In the Depression John lived in Ely with his father (Jacob). Moved around a lot and would tell us (nephew Joe, wife Jennie) of his travels. Had a wife & children in Europe. He looked up Tom & Paul (nephews). Died in Illinois a few years later. Don't know when John Kastello was born. (It was 1872).
"They both probably came at the turn of the century. He did work in the mines once upon a time for a short period of time, a long time ago, then left.
"When we got married in 1933, it was the Depression and John was living here in Ely with Grandpa Kastelic. He didn't stay long. He moved around a lot and used to tell us of his travels. He was on the move a lot. He had a wife and children in Europe, I know.
"The next we heard of him was a few years back when Tom was still in West Allis. He went there from somewhere in Illinois and looked up Tom (his nephews) & Paul, I think. He died in Illinois a few years later. Tom & Paul might remember that. It seems to me they were notified but I'm not sure.
"They had a sister, Josephine Kastelic Kramar, who also came to Ely from Europe, but I don't know when. He birthdate on her tombstone is the Year 1882. Doesn't give the month or date. She died in 1961.
"We know that Joseph, John & Josephine also had a brother named Anton." (THIS IS MIKE'S GRANDFATHER) "Kuzzy remembers his father telling him that his father's name was Anton also. Mrs. Kramar used to tell about his brother Anton being with a circus and one time he came through the town when she was living in Europe and they saw each other and he gave her a carnation. The next thing she heard was that the ship the circus was on had sunk, and she assumed he went down with it as that was the last time she heard anything about him. She described her brother Anton as a very tall, dark-complected man.
"In Europe every house or home had a name and theirs was Pintar. Kuzzy said he remembers Mrs. Kramar talking to his mother about a crippled sister named Palona, which I think would be Pauline in English, but I don't know if she was Grandpa Kastelic's sister or grandma's sister." (She's Joseph, John, Josephine's sister).[dianekoehlerkastelloapril2001.FTW]
