(See documents in file) He was in the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He had an arm broken by a minnie ball at Battle of Second Bull Run, and he was a prisoner of war in Andersonville Prison Camp. He was married at the time of the Civil War to Rosalie (Sarah) Neu.

Check: Marriage date of 1873 (according to 1900 census). I'm sure it's wrong because I know they had children when he enlisted, and the War was over in 1865. Plus, that would have made him 32 when he married. Their 7th child was born in 1874.

Check: 1900 Census says he was here 30 years, came in 1870, so something is wrong somewhere. That would mean he missed the war entirely!

Joseph & Bertha were 2 children of John. John gave the diary to his daughter Bertha who then loaned it to her nephew, Richard, son of Joseph. We can't get a response from him, we want to copy it. Last address is 509 Tenth St. A, Silvis, IL 61282. 309-755-5693. He had no children so I don't know where it might be if he is deceased.
