Jacob Banko was born in (looks like Hinje) Austria and came to the US as a young man. He came directly to the Peru area and met up with the Jurick family, which is where I assume he met Amelia, his future wife. He was 25 and she was 17 when they married. He became a naturalized citizen in 1904. (Papers in hard file)
He was a coal miner in the Peru and LaSalle mines, but not the famous Cherry mines. Dorothy tells me whenever there was a death in the mine, the mine was closed the next day. So each day at 4:00 all would listen for the whistle and if it blew 3 times the miners knew they should not report for work the next day because someone had perished underground.
Jacob was handsome and "very proud of himself". He wore a fancy hat and carried the flag in the parades for St. Rochs. (Photo of church in file) Dottie says, "You would have thought we were millionaires the way he dressed up on Sundays. He was an usher at St. Roch's each Sunday and then went directly to the saloon."
It was generally agreed that he was a ladies man, and although his daughters never mentioned that he was unkind to them, and, in fact, Dottie says "he always treated the kids well," I don't think that carried over to his wife Amelia. She apparently waited on him hand and foot. Helen felt he was drunk all the time. She recalls that she would be the one he wanted to go fetch a pail of beer for a nickel. There was one occasion she remembers the bartender handing her the pail full of beer and she dropped the nickel in it.
We do know Jacob's inlaws lived close by because his father-inlaw John Jurick would stop by on the way home from work and have a pail of beer with Jacob. Jacob died of miner's asthma when he was 53. He is buried in St. Vincent's cemetary in LaSalle, Ill.
