Anton, Sr. was born in 1857 according to his tomb stone, but I also have May 1860 on his death cert. & 1900 census; 1930 census suggests 1858, so we have a mystery as to actual birth date. 1930 Census says he was 21 at his marriage, which puts him at the 1860 date.

He and Anna were married in Yugoslavia in 1881 and Anton came to the United States to seek a new life in 1888-1890, according to various census records. We have the ticket jacket from what we think was his passage over here. Had always thought it was the F. Missler but some hunting reveals that was the name of a German travel company and instead the F. Missler was the most famous "ghost" ship in immigation lore. See insert in file.

He and Anna had eight children, according to census documents, 6 of them living in 1910. When he came to the US he left Anna and (we thought) 3 children behind, but on the passenger list for the ship arriving with Anna we have her traveling with 4 children; Anton, Annie, Mary & the youngest, Franz, 4.

No one has ever heard of or mentioned a 4th child coming over from Slovenia. We have no further information and he is never seen on any subsequent documents. He arrived in 1899 and there is no mention of Franz with the other children on the 1900 census so he must have died between 1899 and 1900.

Initially Anton came to the Cleveland area for a year. He later moved to Sag Bridge, near Joliet, IL, where he operated a shoe repair shop for 2 years, according to his obituary. It also says they came to the US together in 1888, but we know he came alone.

He probably went to work on ILL-MI Canal which was being built around then. His job was a casket maker and shoe maker. Don't know whether he came to LaSalle because there was a Slovenia population there or whether he came to work the mines. He did work the mines a short time.

So after nine years, Anton had saved enough money to send for Anna and the children. After Anna arrived the last three children were born in the United States; Jennie, Louis and Matthew (father of Michael and Matthew Kastello, Jr).

Somewhere along the line he owned a tavern in LaSalle and we think this is where the name change from Kostelc or Kostelic or Kastelic to Kastello happened. A man hired to repaint the sign over the tavern apparently was paid in drinks beforehand and couldn't read Anton's handwriting and hence we ended up becoming Kastello. At least that was the story from Mike's father.

The spelling of the Kastellos varies from document to document.
Ship manifest Kastelic; 1900 census Kastells; 1910 Costello; 1920 Kastelo; 1930 Kostello, so this presents a problem searching.

He was one of the founders of the St. Roch's Church (Slovenian) in LaSalle, of which family remained strong members. Michael & I were married there as well, in 1966. Anton and Anna had been married 60 years shortly before his death.

A note written by Agnes Kastello Kananen to Babe Faleskin Stachowiak refers to Agnes' father (Anton J. (Jr.?) "He was a Justice of the Peace, had an office in the bank, but was never paid. A kind, gentle man, as I remember him, WITH GRANDPA'S WIT. (our Anton Sr.) Like Uncle Mattie (Kastello, my father-in-law). Treasured memories."

Babe also recalls her grandfather (Anton Sr.) once having a toothache and pulling the tooth himself. He then carved a tooth out of a pork chop bone. Also had a big dog named Dewey. His nickname was Storm.
