John Benedict "Puny"3 Wotus (Joseph (Jozef) William2, William Frank1) was born February 12, 1929 in Unity, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, and died March 15, 2005 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut. He married Jean V. Simone May 12, 1957, daughter of Peter Simone and Helen. She was born Abt. 1929 in West New York, Hudson, New Jersey.

John Benedict Wotus, 76, of Colchester, beloved husband of Jean, passed away Tuesday afternoon (March 15, 2005) surrounded by his loving family at the Middlesex Hospice in Middletown, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born February 12, 1929 in Crabtree, PA, he was a son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Kustwan) Wotus.

On May 12, 1957, he wed the former Jean V. Simone. Mr. Wotus was a Supervisor and sheet metal mechanic at Pratt and Whitney for 40 years before his retirement in 1991. He was active in youth baseball in Colchester, including involvement in the construction of the Recreation Park baseball field.

Mr. Wotus enjoyed golf, sports of all kinds and politics, but he will be remembered most fondly for his devotion as a husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his loving wife of nearly 48 years, he is survived by three children and their spouses, John and Sandy Wotus of Colchester, Ron and Laurie Wotus of Pleasant Hill, CA and Cheryl Wotus and Matt Mega of Seattle, WA; two grandsons, Justin and Connor; three sisters, Violet Exline of Memphis, TN, MaryJane Rainer of Jeanette, PA and Alice Stula of Colchester; three brothers, Joe Wotus of Feeding Hills, MA, and Stan and Frank Wotus, both of Crabtree, PA; and numerous extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Emily Beltz and Jean Tetorka; and a brother, Andy Wotus

COACHING CAREER
Has spent 11 years in Giants organization, including 7 as manager in farm system (1991-97)...was twice named Manager of Year, while posting overall 554-412 record (.574) in minors...his teams finished above .500 mark and made playoffs in 6 of 7 years as skipper.

Finished his 2nd season as Dusty Baker's bench coach and 3rd overall on staff...also assisted with infield defense.

Joined Baker's staff as 3rd base coach, 1st Major League coaching assignment of career.

Served as manager for Giants' triple-A affiliate Phoenix, leading Firebirds to (back-to-back Pacific Coast League playoff appearances with 2 Southern Division) championships...was named 1997 PCL Manager of Year after piloting Firebirds to best record in all of triple-A baseball with 88-55 mark...that team finished season with one of best 2nd half finishes in PCL history, winning 41 of its final 51 games...1996 trip to post-season marked first for Phoenix in 10 years.

Led SF's double-A franchise at Shreveport to 3 straight playoff berths...his 1995 club claimed Texas League championship with 88-47 mark, best record in all of minor league baseball.

1991-92
Skippered single-A San Jose...was tabbed California League's Manager of Year in 1991 when he guided squad to playoffs with 92-44 ledger, best mark in all of professional baseball.

Was originally 16th round draft pick of Pittsburgh Pirates in 1979...enjoyed 11-year professional career, including parts of 1983 and '84 seasons with Pirates' Major League club...played in 32 big league games with Bucs, owning .207 career mark with 2 RBI...made his Major League debut Sept. 3, 1983 in Atlanta...1st Major League hit was single off Dodgers' Orel Hershiser at LA July 4, 1984...6 of his 12 Major League hits in 1984 were doubles...his 1st multiple-hit game came in his last big league outing, 2nd game of Sept. 30, 1984 doubleheader at Philadelphia...was named Carolina League All-Star shortstop in 1981, while playing at Hagerstown...also played in Kansas City organization in 1987, before concluding his career in Giants' chain...played for Phoenix in 1988 and '89, accumulating .278 batting average.
