bullet William BRIGGS(148) was born on 4 Apr 1853 in Leesville, Henry County, Missouri. He died on 10 Aug 1939 in Leesville, Henry County, Missouri. In 1879, William was ordained to the gospel ministry at the Tebo Baptist Church in Leesville. During his life as a minister, William would become affectionately known as "Uncle Billy." William worked in the ministry for over 40 years, serving as pastor and district missionary, and for a long period continued to preach, conduct funeral services, and comfort the sick and sorrowing.

A Brief Account of the Life
Of William Briggs
In His Own Words

I was born April 4, 1853, on the farm near Leesville; the son of James and Nancy Briggs. Was converted in January 1866, and joined the Tebo Baptist church the fourth Sunday in February, 1866. Was baptized by Elder W. A. Gray the same day. The creek was bank full. I was so small the pastor lifted me up in his arms and carried me out.

I grew up under the care of a godly father and mother who took me to church and Sunday school. I was married to Laura E. Gray, by Rev. Thomas Briggs, April 9, 1874. To this union eight children were born, two have died, two of the boys are in the ministry, W.H. and James D.

I was ordained to the ministry in 1880. During my ministerial life and work for two years I was missionary of the Osage association, which was the cause of many souls being saved. I have served the following churches as pastor in Benton county--Shady Grove 14 years; Spring Grove 6; Post Oak 3; Pleasant Hill 3; Fredonia 2; Cold Springs 1; Clear Creek 2; Oak Grove 3; Bethel 4. In Henry county--Old Tebo 2; Mt. Olivet 2; Good Hope 1; Stone Mission 3; Mount Zion 3; Finey 4; Pleasant Ridge 2; Grand River 1, all of which were pleasant people and pastorates to work with. Many of God's dear people were there, but many have gone on to their reward.

I have not kept a record of conversions and baptisims, but the Lord knows. That is enough for me. My ministerial life has been pleasant and not all in vain, so has my home life. My God given companion has been a true and loving helpmeet in the home in my ministry and in every way. Her children call her blessed like the virtuous woman Solomon spoke of in Proverbs 31:10-30.

When I look back over my life, I say surely goodness and mercy have followed me all the days of my life. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. I have a goodly heritage but like Paul, these hands have ministered to my wants many days. I followed the plow and got my text lide the sower, so I have no regrets. We never wanted in the home life, and ministeral does not conflict. We have had plenty by putting the kingdom of God first. All other things have followed. We are happy, spending much time in reading the Bible. I read the entire Bible through once and twice each year and it is better every time. The Lord fills every promise. Praise his name.

William Briggs
January 1931

He was married to Laura Etta GRAY on 9 Apr 1874 in Leesville, Henry County, Missouri. 65th Wedding Anniversary
of William and Laura Briggs

The 65th wedding anniversary of Rev. and Mrs. William Briggs of Leesville Township came this year on Easter Sunday. They have spent most of their lives in and near that community and although Rev. Briggs, in his ministry has been called to other places, his home has remained near Leesville.

Rev. Briggs, or Uncle Billy, as he is known far and wide, has served God for 74 years. As a lad 12 years old he gave his heart and life to God and joined Tebo Baptist Church. The son and grandson of Baptist ministers, his call to follow the Master has been faithfully answered for he has given the gospel message to eastern Henry County and other communities, having held pastorates in 17 churches, performed approximately 250 weddings and conducted the last rites on numerous occasions, besides doing all that would further God's Kingdom and serve his fellow man. Deep spiritual knowledge of the Bible and consecration made his ministry outstanding.

Rev. Briggs read his Bible through twice a year as long as his eyesight was unimpaired, but now that he cannot see, his devoted companion of 65 years reads the word of everlasting life to him, also the daily and weekly news through which he keeps in touch with his neighbors and friends, whose activities are of constant interest.

Rev. Briggs was born in Leesville Township October 3, 1856 (incorrect date). His sister, Mrs. Fannie Scovel, of Woodward, Oklahoma left Friday after a visit here. His brother, Daniel Briggs, lives near Hortense with his daughter, Mrs. Ed Snow, and family. Another sister, Mrs. Tabitha Chastain, lives near the Briggs home.

Rev. William Briggs and Laura Etta Gray were married April 9, 1874. She has been a constant helper, devoted wife and mother to her dear companion and family. She suffers with rheumatism. Mrs. Becca Crowder is their housekeeper.

A family scrapbook is being kept by Mrs. Verr Harvey, grandaughter of Rev. and Mrs. Briggs, who was given this book by her mother, Mrs. Jesse Briggs. The book was at first a place for interestting pictures of women's styles; poems and other clippings of interest. Mrs. Harvey has added to this the family history, where bits of information have been pasted, including the 50th wedding anniversary of her grandparents, which was also attended by 16 of the couples he united in marriage.

Uncle Billy and wife were given eight children, two sons having entered the ministry, Rev. James Briggs of Lamonte and Rev. Henry Briggs of Ottawa, Kansas. Other living children are Jesse Briggs, and Mrs. Robert Sheek of Leesville Township; Mrs. Charles Vanhoozer, St. John, Kansas; John Briggs, Ft. Scott, Kansas. Other descendants include: Mrs. Verr harvey and daughter, Natalie; Frank Briggs and four children of Grand Junction, Colorado; Billy H. Briggs and child of Kansas City; Raymond Briggs and daughter, Darlene; Earl Briggs and three children, Gillcrest, Colorado; Mrs. Paul Still and two children; Miss Jewel Briggs of Kansas; L. Briggs of Kansas City; Arvin Vanhoozer and child, St. John, Kansas; Everett Vanhoozer and three children, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mrs. Helen Graham and sons, Kenneth, Robert, Harold and Billy, of Fort Scott, Kansas; Lester Briggs and child of Sedalia; Fred Briggs of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Wallace Dundas and child, the latter of near Santiago; Miss Reva June Sheek of Clinton and Morris Vernon Sheek, near Coal.

Besides part of the family who called others included Mr. and Mrs Perry Carleton of Kingsville; Miss Lydall Vanhoozer; Mr. and Mrs Si Crowder; and Miss Oleta Dukes.
