Bartlett Allen, set a sapling elm outside the door of his home farm on what
would become lot #26 in Farmington, Frankilin, Maine. This was nearly a
year before he married. By 1892 when the farm belonged to one Francis S.
Rogers the grand old elm was nearly a hundred feet high and the trunk had a
girth of over twelve feet. Bartlett was born at Chilmark on the Vineyard
August 25th 1781 and was just 10 when his family arrived in Maine.

A year after his marriage to Lucy Fairbanks, he was elected to the position
of town clerk (for the first time in 1810) and in 1813 he was for the first
time a member of the board of selectmen; he served seven more one-year
terms as clerk and likewise served eight terms on the board of selectmen.
Three years after his first wife's death (Lucy died 25 Aug 1820), he sold
his farm to a John Bailey of Farmington on 25 March 1823 and returned to
his birthplace with his three children by his first wife. Apparently he had
already married a second time to Priscilla Dexter (b. 12 May 1797) probably
in Maine since the 21 Oct 1821 marriage was not recorded in any records on
the Vineyard. But she was born in Edgartown and her parents died there, so
it may have been an arranged marriage and she joined him in Maine.
Subsiquently they had two more children. She died 24 Mar 1867 five years
ahead of him-he was past 90 years old at his death on in Tisbury.
