According to Ronald Stephens in his work, "The Descendants of Uriah Stephens and Nancy Kevil, privately published in 1995, "...the family migrated to South Carolina from Virginia, although the date is not known. Records show that Benj. Kivel witnessed the sale of property on June 13, 1774, in Louisa County, Virginia, that son Thomas was living in Virginia in 1790, that daughter Mary married Julius Glazebrook on December 23, 1790, in Campbell County, Virginia, and that son Benjamin married Betsy Akin in Laurens County, South Carolina, probably around 1775-1779...."

The Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Vol. 30, No. 2, pages 88 and 89:

November 10, 1780 - Sundry inhabitants of Cumberland County petitions the House of Delegates to reject a bill forbidding the use of depreciated currency (?) in payment of debts. The substance of the bill is that no paper currency shall remain a tender and pass in payment of debts and contracts as herefore, but that all debts and all loan office tickets be paid in as much money as will purchase such a quantity of tobacco as the money would have purchased at the time the contract was made or the money lent. Signitures were: Thomas Kevil and 185 other residents of Cumberland County, Virginia.

Thomas Kevil of Spartanburg South Carolina sold to Reuben Gunn of Spartanburg for 42 pounds 10 shillings sterling money, 180 acres on the Enoree River including the mouth of Abner's Creek being part of original grant of 500 acres granted to Thomas Seatton, Esquire, and surveyed by James Wofford 27 January 1775 and afterwards conveyed to Colonel Richard Hampton from said Hampton to Stephen Cantrell and from said Cantrell 350 acres to Thomas Kevil.
