Notes for George Pettit Kevil: George Pettit Kevil was known as "Pet", "Pettit", or "Pete", and to his family he was called "Pet." He gradated from Bowling Green Business College in Kentucky, and was never married. Pettit worked for the Sea Train in Texas City, Texas, and was there at the time of the great explosion in 19??. Fortunately, the day of the explosion was his day off. Pettit lived on Oakmont Street in Houston, Texas in a lovely home which he had redecorated. The home was located in a magnificent section of Houston called Riverside. He was living there when the integration movement began. The NAACP bought several homes in that location in order to promote integration, and the white home owners gradually sold out. Pettit was one of the last to leave the area, and this time he retired and moved to Princeton, Kentucky. He lived in the old Kevil house on Hopkinsville Street until his death. His funeral was held at Morgan's Funeral Home in Princeton, Kentucky on March 8, 1989 at 2:00 P.M. Wayne Bishop officiated at the service, and the pallbearers were: Robert Duke Stevenson (nephew), Thomas Dudley Stevenson (nephew), George Pettit, Claude Aiken, Marvin Pogrotsky, and Gary W. Peek. He was interned at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Princeton, Kentucky. EXCERPTS FROM A LETTER WRITTEN BY VIRGINIA MORGAN Pettit's life ended March 6, 1989 at 1:15 PM. The sting of death always hurts even though we all know we are made for a higher destiny than that of earth. I think he would have been pleased with his "farewell service." The Methodist minister had the message, and the Baptist minister had scripture and prayer. His clothes were impeccable as usual. Death was a friend to him, to relieve him of physical misery. Life is a gift, but a task. "Old age is not for sissies." To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die. We all have cherished memories of Pettit. OBITUARY in Princeton Ledger Services for Pettit Kevil, of the Hopkinsville Road, were held Wednesday, March 8, at 2 P.M. at Morgan's Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Bishop officiating, assisted by Dr. Bill Tichenor. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mr. Kevil, age 78, died Monday at 1:15 P.M. in Caldwell County Hospital emergency room following a long illness. A native of Caldwell County, he was born November 24, 1910, a son of the late James Robert and Louise Pettit Kevil. A retired accountant, he was a member of the Ogden Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include three sisters, Margaret Lowry and Laura Morgan, both of Princeton, and Kathryn Kevil, of Princeton, Florida. |

In his early childhood (around the age of eight), he was riding a horse at the Kevil home and it fell on him and damaged his leg. While there, he developed Scarlet Fever, and was transferred to the Baptist Hospital where he died February 2, 1934 at the age of 21-years and 6-months. The funeral was at the Methodist Church, and was conducted by the Reverand R. W. Reaf. He was a member of the Ogden Memorial Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, and was a junior member of Kevil's Dry Goods Store in Princeton, Kentucky. EXCERPTS FROM OBITUARY: Calwell County Times - February 15, 1934 During all those years, he bore his suffering outward joviality, never at any time complaining, and his close associates were never aware of the suffering he endured. His friendliness to all made him many friends, and his passing leaves a vacant place in their hearts that will be hard to fill. The pallbearers were: Thomas Lacy, Irl Stevens, Stanley Sharp, Sam Jones, Frank Herron, and Brooks Starr. |
