(Newspaper 1939) Almost Instant Death Comes To Well Known Young Man

CHARLES T. KEVIL

Charles (Chuck) Kevil, age 25, shot and instantly killed himself at his home on South Seminary Street last night about 11:15 o'clock. Details obtained today concerning the deplorable event fail to reveal whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

KEVIL, who was accompanied by his wife, Elizabeth Mann KEVIL and baby daughter, had just driven into the driveway at their home on returning from town when the shooting occurred.

Mrs. KEVIL, with baby in her arms had gotten out of the car on one side and Mr. KEVIL had opened the other door supposedly prepared to step out after taking a twenty-five calibre automatic from the dash compartment when the three shots were fired. All three slugs struck the young man full in the left breast, and he toppled from the car, dying a few minutes later after being removed to the house by neighbors who were summoned by his wife. He was a member of one of Princeton's most prominent families being a son of Mrs. and the late J. R. KEVIL, and a grandson of the late George PETTIT and R. Urey KEVIL. He was one of the city's prominent young business men having for the past several years operated the KEVIL Milling Company.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, his mother, Mrs. J. P. KEVIL. Three brothers, Pettit, Galveston, Texas, Robert and Ralph of this city, and four sisters, Mrs. John MORGAN, Katherine, who is attending Stephens College at Columbia, Missouri; Mrs. L. H. LOWERY and Louise. Funeral services will be conducted from the home of his mother, Mrs. J. R. KEVIL at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

LAST RITES CONDUCTED FOR CHARLES KEVIL

Impressive Services For Prominent Young Man Held Wednesday

Impressive funeral services were held for Charles Kevil, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22nd, at the home of his mother, Mrs. J. R. Kevil, on the Hopkinsville Road.

The Rev. W. Leroy Baker, pastor of Ogden Memorial Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member, said the eloquent and comforting last rites. Memorial music was a consoling and appropriate feature of the service, the following bringing the message in song, Mrs. W. O. Towery, Mrs. Frank K. Wylie, Messrs. Robert Morgan and Orland Love. Mrs. J. H. Ratliff was at the piano.

Pall bearers were the following well known young companions of the deceased: Shelby Hillyard, Willard Mitchell, Billy Newsom, Sam Jones, James Catlett and John Loftus, Jr.

Internment took place in the sacred quietude of Princeton's beautiful little city of the dead, Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Charles Thomas Kevil was a native Princetonian, born Sept. 1st 1914. He was the fourth son of Mrs. Louise Pettit Kevil and the late J. Robert Kevil, former mayor of this city, prominent banker, merchant, and successful agriculturalist. The deceased was a representative of families that were as outstanding in civic and financial affairs as any in the vicinity. His paternal grandfather, R. U. Kevil, established flour mills in several West Kentucky cities and these firms are still in operation, some of them under the successful management of his decedents. "Chuck" was in charge of the original mill ownership, established by his grandfather, at the time of his tragic death.

His paternal grandmother was Laura Holloway Kevil, native Lyon Countian. The distaff side of his inheritance was also outstanding. His maternal grandparents being of the late George Pettit, (well known as a successful and progressive agriculturist of the Eddyville Road), and the late Betty Duke Pettit, one of the county's most esteemed and beloved women.

Charles was popular with young and old, his affability, and genial disposition, won friends from all ranks of life, and among both young and old. He will be sadly missed, not only by his little family, and those of other blood ties, but from the circle of progressive and younger business men.

Surviving Mr. Kevil are his lovely young widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Mann Kevil, whom he brought here as a bride from Trigg County; a tiny daughter, Joan Pettit Kevil; his mother, Mrs. Louise Pettit Kevil, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Herman Lowry, Mrs. John B. Morgan, Misses Katherine and Louise Kevil; Robert U. Kevil and Ralph Kevil, all of Princeton, and Pettit Kevil of Galveston, Texas. He also leaves two small nieces, Ann Kevil Morgan Betty Gayle Morgan, a nephew, James Robert Kevil, and several aunts and uncles, besides hosts of sorrowing friends. One young brother, James Kevil, preceded him in death in 1934.
