QUOTE
FRANCIS KING III & HIS FAMILY

153,2 ---- Francis King III was born between 1750 and 1755 as calculated from census returns of Appoquinimink Hundred in New Castle Co., Del. for 1800, 1810, and 1820, and also the 1830 census of the 1st Election District of Cecil Co., Md. He was apparently born in New Castle Co., Del. Subsequently, Francis King III died prior to 18 Jan 1832 in Cecil Co., Md. when his will dated 13 Nov 1830 was brought into court for probate (noted in Cecil Co., Md. Will Book 8, p. 387). In it, he willed that his wife (not named) was to receive one-third of his estate with the rest to go to his son Jacob King who was living with him in 1830. Also Francis King III stated that his son Francis King (IV) and his daughter Temperence King were to receive 50 cents each. Additionally, three others who were apparently also his children were similarly willed only 50 cent each--they were: Rachel Pugh "of Cecil County," Ann Levirnge "of New Castle County, Delaware," and Elizabeth Price also "of Cecil County, Maryland."
Francis King III was apparently married at least 3 times and had perhaps as many as 17 children although the names of only 7 are known for certain (some of the other 10 may have died before adulthood). The previously noted census records his will, and other documents to be cited are the sources of information for his family as will be discussed. The 1800 census returns for Appoquinimink Hundred in New Castle Co., list Francis King III with a wife then between 26 and 45 years old. Also they are listed with 10 other family members, apparently their children. The oldest was a female then aged 16-26 years old. Francis King III's wife before 1800 was named "Susanna" as suggested in a Cecil Co., Md. deed dated 7 Sept 1796 (Cecil Co., Md. Deed book 19), p. 581). It noted that "Francis King and his wife Susanna of, Appoquinimink Hundred in New Castle Co., Del." sold for 30 pounds their interest in the land of Nathaniel Chick of Cecil Co., Md. Their interest was due to Susanna's being a daughter of one of the devisees named in Chick's will which was written in Cecil Co., Md. on 8 Mar 1777. Subsequently, Susanna apparently died before 1800.
Francis King III by 1799 seems to have had a 2nd wife whose maiden name was "Vandyke"--being a daughter (her 1st name is uncertain) of Jacob Vandyke who died in 1805 in New Castle Co., Del. In his will (in New Castle Co., Del. Will Book Q-l, p. 106) "Jacob Vandyke named his "grandsons" Francis King (IV) and John King (with Francis IV's known birthdate of ca. 24 Jan 1800 from his gravestone used for calculating the approximate year of his parent's marriage). (It will be noted in CHAPTER 48 that Francis King IV later sold land he inherited from his grandfather Vandyke in 1805.) Since Jacob Vandyke did not name his daughter who was the mother of his 2 grandsons, perhaps she had died prior to 1805 leaving only the 2 children.
Later, according to the 1810 census of Appoquinimink Hundred in New Castle Co., Del., Francis King III is listed with, a wife then aged between 26 and 45 years old. Also shown in their family were 5 other persons, 4 of whom were born between 1800 and 18lO, who apparently were children of Francis King III. Subsequently, the 1820 census of Appoquinimink Md. lists Francis King III with a wife then aged between 26 and 45 years old. Along with them were recorded 4 other family members who were apparently children of Francis King III. The youngest of these 4 was a female under age 10 years.
Finally, Francis King ,III is listed in the 1830 census of Cecil Co., Md. in the "1st Election District" (being he southern part of that county) as, himself, between 70 and 80 years old. His apparent wife was listed as 30-40 years old which suggests that she was probably a 3rd (or even 4th) wife. Listed with them were 4 other family members: a male 20-30 years old, a 2nd male 15-20 years old, a 3rd male 10-15 years old, and a female 15-20 years old. This latter female, however, is too old to have been Francis King III's child Temperence King whom he named as his daughter in his will (as will be shown, Temperence's gravestone notes that she was born ca. 1830-- thus she apparently was his youngest child who was born after the 1830 census was taken). The name of the last wife of Francis King III may have been "Henrietta" although the evidence for this deduction is imperfect. In 1850 a Henrietta King "age 45" was living with the Francis King IV family in Cecil Co., Md. Possibly her age was incorrectly recorded as on the 1840 census for the same county, Francis King IV was shown to have had a woman 40-50 years old living with him And his family. It is possible that she was his step-mother--thus Henrietta.
In the 1790's, Francis King III apparently was in ownership of a Farm in St. Georges Hundred in New Castle Co., Del. which he may have Inherited or been given earlier) from his father. Subsequently, on 11 Aug 1792 Francis King III purchased an additional 33 acres and 126 perches of land from Cornelius Armstrong for 168 pounds, 18 shillings, and 9 pence (noted in New Castle Co., Del. Deed Book 2, p. 163). This land was called "Weston" and was located in St. Georges Hundred 0n the "westermost branch of second Drawyers Creek dividing this from the land of Robert Haughey," and bounded by other land owned by Francis King and James Haughey. Afterwards, in 1800-1820, Francis King III lived in Appoquinimink Hundred in New Castle Co., Del., and by 1830 in neighboring Cecil County, Md.
