QUOTE
CHAPTER 48 Francis King IV (1800-1876)
153,25 Francis King IV was a son of Francis King III and his 2nd wife who was
a Miss Vandyke (see CHAPTER 46 for data on her). Francis King IV was born ca.
24 Jan 1800 apparently in New Castle County, Delaware and died 14 March 1876
probably in Cecil County, Maryland. He is buried by his 4th wife in the Cecilton,
Maryland City Cemetery and his gravestone reports that he was "aged 76 yrs.
l mo. & 21 days" old when he died. Francis King IV married 4 times and
apparently had at least 18 children although the names of only 13 are known.
Francis 1st married in the early 1820's to Frances Broxson, daughter of John
Broxson of Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. Francis and his
1st wife had 8 children and lived in Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County,
Delaware prior to moving into Cecil County, Maryland between November 1828 and
1831. Frances (Broxson) King then died prior to 9 Dec 1837 when Francis King
IV 2nd married in Cecil County, Maryland to Deborah Mears. They had 3 children
and she apparently died prior to 10 Oct 1846 when Francis King IV 3rd married
in Cecil County, Maryland to Mary S. Pantry. She was born about 1815 in Maryland
and died before November 1853. She and Francis had 2 children. Finally, Francis
King IV 4th married 9 Nov 1853 in Cecil County, Maryland to Sarah M. Canan. She
was born 29 March 1829 in Maryland and died 12 May 1889 (these dates are from
her tombstone). Francis and Sarah had 5 children.
Francis King IV and his 1st wife Frances (Broxson) King are mentioned in
records of New castle County, Delaware. Both are named in the will of her father
John Broxson of Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware which was
written 31 Aug 1825. (NOTE: Frances (Broxson) King was further noted to be the
daughter of John Broxson by his 1st wife whose name is not listed in a short
genealogical write-up located in the Historical Society of Delaware in Wilmington,
Delaware. This record is entitled: "A Historical and Biographical Sketch
of the Harris Family of Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware."
It additionally notes that John Broxson's 2nd wife was named Temperence Harris
and that they had a daughter Rachel Broxson who was born in 1810, and who married
a "Sewell King" --his identity is unknown, however.)
On 20 Nov 1828 in New Castle County, Delaware, Francis King IV (listed
as "Francis King Jr." as his father was still alive) and his 1st wife
Frances of Appoquinimink Hundred sold to Jacob Vandyke of the same Hundred for
$140 the land which Francis IV had received in the will of his grandfather Jacob
Vandyke (see CHAPTER 46 for data on this will). The land involved was called
"Huff's Ridge" (with the deed recorded in New Castle Co., Del. Deed
Book I-4, p. 46). Following this, on 13 Aug 1831 Francis King IV and his wife
Frances were noted to have been living in nearby Cecil County, Maryland. On that
day they sold to Jacob Vandyke of Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware
their share in the farm of Frances's father John Broxson for $200 {noted in New
Castle Co., Del. Deed Book N-4, p. 360). This farm included 300 acres in Appoquinimink
Hundred.
On 18 Nov 1830, "Francis King Jr." (Francis King IV) gave a mortgage
deed on personal properly for $300 to his brother-in-law (#153,23) John B. Price
(see CHAPTER 47 for data on him). Both were noted to have been "of Cecil
County, Maryland" on the deed (recorded in Cecil Co., Md. Deed Rook JS-28,
p. 295). Subsequently Francis King IV is mentioned in 11 additional Cecil County,
Maryland deeds mostly involving mortgages. One of the last ones, however, involved
the sale of his Land. It was dated 1 March 1872 and was the sale by Francis and
his 4th wife Sarah for $5,700 to Edward W. Lockwood of New Castle County, Delaware
of 118 acres and 38 perches of land (noted in Cecil Co., Md. Deed Book DS-6,
p. 139). This land was noted to have been part of the land formerly owned by
David Davis but which was conveyed to Sarah M. (Canan) King (Francis's 4th wife)
by Thomas VanDyke and his wife (#153,233) Elizabeth (Price) VanDyke on 29 Aug
1863 (Elizabeth was Francis's cousin--see CHAPTER 47).
Finally, the last record for Francis King IV and his 4th wife in Cecil County,
Maryland is dated 28 March 1873. It is a sale by them of various personal property
including corn and horses for $684,78 lo Edward W. Lockwood who had previously
purchased their land in 1872 (noted in Cecil Co., Md. Deed Book DS-9, p. 301).
Francis King IV died less than 3 years after th1s last-known record.
As noted, Francis King IV apparent had 18 children by his 4 wives. The names
of only 13 are known with the other 5 being suggested only by census returns
of the "1st Election District" of southern Cecil County, Maryland for
1830 and 1840. Unfortunately, these returns do not list specific names of the
children of Francis King IV, but do give their sexes and approximate ages. Based
on this incomplete data, the 5 "unknown" children of Franc1s King IV
apparently were all by his 1st wife Frances and include 2 daughters and a son
who presumably died young. The other 2 "unknown" children were sons
born between 1820 and 1825 who perhaps left home (or died) prior to 1850 which
is the first census year reporting the specific names of Francis King IV's children
(they were then living with h1m and his 3rd wife In Cecil County, Maryland).
Subsequently, Francis King IV's family is again listed in the 1860 and 1870 census
returns for the "1st Election D1strict" near Cecilton 1n Cecil County,
Maryland where they farmed. (Informat1on used 1n th1s wr1te-up came from cemetery
records, census returns, data 1n the H1stor1cal Soc1cly of Delaware in Wi1minglon,
and deeds, wills, and marriage records in the New Castle County, Delaware and
Cecil County, Maryland courthouses.)
Listed below are the 13 "known" children of Francis King IV:

Hempany") Nothing further is known about him.
