SECOND GENERATION
2. Paul Schnabele
was born on
17 May 1783 in Betting Hof, Alsace (Bettinger's estate). He was naturalized
on 11 Mar 1852 in State of New York, Oneida County.
(1) He died in 1864 in Holmes Co. OH. He was christened in Reformed
Church of Neuhornburg. He was buried in Ullman cemetery, 1.5mi East of Loudonville
OH, Twp RD 456. .
Paul Schnabele with his wife and children migrated to America in Mar 15,1830
and settled in Rome, NY and from there moved to Loudonville, OH and purchased
a home in Homes CO. OH. In the Personalien (written in German) Paul states "I
became an orphan in early youth and had to live among strangers, but the good
Lord, our GOD, blesses with a long and happy marriage as well as a peaceful old
age." This info is taken from a record left by Paul Snively written in German
and later typed by Charles A. Snively. Had 7 children, 2 died as infant.
PAUL SCHNABELE (b. May 17,1783, prob. Bavaria) was baptized in the Reformed Church
of Nehornburg (Bavaria?). He married BARBARA WEISS, born Mar.20, 1784. In a Personalien
(personal history), written in German, Paul says "I became an orphan in
early youth and had to live among strangers," a puzzling statement, as his
father, Nicholas, died in 1854, when Paul was 71. However, it is possible that
for unknown reasons his parents had put him in a foster home, as the term "orphan"
does not indicate the death of one's parents, but the deprivation of them for
whatever reason. But Donald Snively, a great-great grandson has two other possible
explanations: (1) since Paul was illiterate, as indicated by an "x"
signature on a document Donald has seen, he may have had a "ghost writer"
or hired secretary who had misunderstood the terminology, or (2) as family tradition
has it that Paul was a redhead, he may have had the personality that is popularly
attributed to such people (Donald has reasons for thinking, though he didn't
elaborate); he may have quarreled with his father and been more or less "disowned"
and either was sent or went on his own to Alsace to live "among strangers"
(though possibly relatives, descendants of Jacob Schnebele (b. 1624) who tool
his family from Affoltern am Albis, Canton Zurich, Switzerland about 1659.
At any rate, Paul and his family and possibly a brother, came to America from
Betting Hof, Alsace, in 1830 (a 77-day voyage), settling first in Rome, N.Y.,
then going to Holmes Co., Ohio, and finally just west of there to the area around
Loudonville, Ashland Co., Ohio. In his "Personalien", Paul comments:
"... the good Lord, our God, blessed (me) with a long and happy marriage
as well as a peaceful old age." Barbara (Weiss) Schnabele died in 1862,
Paul two years later. Both are buried in Ullman Cemetery,1.5 miles East of Loudonville
on Twp Rd 456.
.
He was married to Barbara Weiss in Betting Hof, Alsace.
Barbara Weiss
