G us spent his boyhood years during a historically exciting t ime---around the turn of the century---and was always goo d for a fascinating story of Quantrell and his men raidin g Sherman and then riding back across the Red River into In dian Territory. Another of his vivid recollections was of t he "cyclone" which struck Sherman on May 15, 1896, doing ex tensive damage to property and killing many people.Gus mad e it through these exciting times . For most of his adult l ife, Gus worked as a hostler for the Frisco Railroad in She rman, retiring in 1943: for several years after his retirem ent, he raised and showed prize pedigreed rabbits throughou t state. Ki t Owsley and Charles Miller establishedthe Sherman _Courier _ in 1866 and soon after sold it to Bass and SilasHare. Af ter only a few editions, Bass dropped out of the enterprise .G.A. Dickerman became the actual publisher and Hare sold h is interest to
