"Q. Was my town named for that cruel judge of the Salem Witch Trials, William Stoughton? O.R., Stoughton

A. It was. Stoughton was chief justice of the Colonial Massachusetts court of oyer and terminer. Beginning in 1692 the court launched the largest witch hunt in American history. Nineteen men and women were convicted and hanged as witches and another man was pressed to death with large stones. About 150 other people were imprisoned on witchcraft trials. The hangings only ceased when Massachusetts deputy governor Joseph Dudley began to question Stoughton's admission in court of 'spectral evidence' or supernatural displays. Clergy began to condemn the practice. The witch trials, which many historians believe were motivated by the desire for land grabs among some Salem residents, gradually ceased. Your town was named for William because his father, Israel, had been a large landholder in the original town of Dorchester, of which Stoughton was a part until its incorporation in 1743."
