Martin Edward Kingman left Reading, MA January 11, 1843 for New York City; boarded with his brother-in-law, William Phelpes, at 25 Rosevelt Street until May 1, 1843 and moved with the family to 24 Mott Street and later to 17 1/2 Eldridge Street. On May 1, 1851, he moved into his own house at 28 Pike Street and on May 1, 1860 moved his family to Brooklyn in the old house then standing on the north-east corner of Grand and Putnam Aves. The old house was moved back to Downing Street and the present homestead was built October 1861 to May 1862.

Martin Edward Kingman commenced business Feb. 1848 at 118-120 Chatham Street with William Phelps, having purchased the interest in the concern of his brother Henry W. Kingman. In Feb. 1863, bought William Phelps' interest and was alone until 1871 when he sold out to brother William, on account of ill-health. He was 47 years old when he gave up his business.
