Bryant Reed, died. As was her custom, my mother had come downstairs and fallen back asleep on the couch. While she was asleep, she was told later, her father came over to the couch and kissed her. Then he went to his wife and touched her hand. He was then off to do his chores in the barn. He and the hired man were working there. Bryant was pitching hay down from the loft. It was probably hot, it being early August. Somehow Bryant fell. The hired man ran to the house yelling something about "dead". Lura and 5 year old bernice Simpson, a cousin who was visiting, ran to the barn. Bernice came back saying something about "He still breeding." Lura sent the hired man next door to tell John Morse that Bryant was hurt and to come help. My mother stayed in the house during all of this. After awhile John came to the house and announced to all waiting there that "Bryant is dead." He had broken his neck in the fall.

My mother doesn't remember much about the funeral except the way her father looked in his casket. She had never seen a dead person before. It seemed strange to her that her father still had his tan even though he was dead. And she thought that his nose seemed larger than she remembered.

The following is from the August 8, 1923 edition of the Bangor Daily News: "YOUNG DIXMONT MAN KILLED BY A FALL - Dixmont, Aug. 7 - Bryant Reed was instantly killed this morning by a fall from a hay mow where he was working, striking on his head on the barn floor. He was a young man of excellent character and much promise and his untimely death is great shock to the community." Parents: Frederick Garland Reed and Elizabeth Sophronia Croxford.

Ward Reed Colonel was born in 1762 in Woburn, MA.⁽¹⁴³⁾ He died in Feb 1843.⁽¹⁴³⁾ Ruth B. Kingman says in her brief "Scetch of the Reeds" that:

"Scotland was the home of the Reeds in the time of the Scottish clans. Their name was then Williams. They lived in a place where there grew many reeds, so the head of the family came to be called William of Reed, later William Reed.

After a while the Reeds scattered to England. It was from England that they came to America.

A notable scion of the family at the time of the Revolution was Colonel Ward Reed, who served General George Washington, and was one of his aids at the battle of Trenton and Princeton. He was also in the boat with Washington when he crossed the Delaware in the ice."
