John Thomas Harris (son of Benjamin Harris and Ann Coldtop) was born 1800 in Dover, Kent, and died 11 May 1879 in North Street, Folkestone, Kent. He married (1) Elizabeth Gittens. He married (2) Sarah Saunders on 21 Jul 1833 in St James, Dover, Kent, daughter of William Saunders and Mary Richards.

The first record I can find of John Thomas and Sarah is their Marriage dated 21 July 1833. This is from the IGI and the Folkestone Parish Records.

By the first census in 1841, John Thomas (40) and Sarah (30) are living in Fancy Street, Folkestone. John is a Ropemaker and living with them are:-
Benjamin Harris, 14. By his first marriage.
John Harris, 7.
William Harris, 5.
Thomas Harris, 2.
Jane Harris, 10mth.

When Benjamin his first son married Hannah in 1850, John was still a Ropemaker.

In the 1851 Census, they have moved to Radnor Street, Folkestone where John (50) is now a Mariner and Ropemaker. Living with him was his wife Sarah (42) and the following:-
John T Harris, 17, a Mariner.
William Harris, 15, an Apprentice to Tailor.
Thomas Harris, 12, a Scholar.
Walter Harris, 6, a Scholar.
Jane Harris, 4.
Ann Harris, 2.

During the period 1841-51, John and Sarah lost two children. Jane 1840-42 and Henry 1842-43.

In the 1861 Census, John Thomas Harris was living in Rador Street, Folkestone, Kent. I believe the house was No. 1 and was the first house on the left hand side as you come under the viaduct. It no longer exists and the space is now occupied by the Folkestone Yacht Club. (See scrapbook picture No. 1.) His occupation in 1861was Mariner and living at the house with him were the following people:-

Sarah Harris nee. Saunders his second wife aged 52.
Walter Harris his son aged 17 also a Mariner.
Jane Harris his daughter aged 14.
Ann Harris his daughter aged 12 a scholar.
James Harris his son aged 9 a scholar.

Also living with him were:-
William Henry Harris his so aged 25 who was a Tailor.
Mary Ann Harris nee. Hogben aged 23, Williams wife.
Walter Harris their son aged 6 months.

In the 1871 Census we know find John Thomas living in North Street, Folkestone, Kent. This runs adjacent to Radnor Street. His occupation says he was "Formerly a Ropemaker" Those living with him were:-

Sarah Harris his wife aged 62.
Walter Harris his son aged 27 still a Mariner.
James Harris his son aged 19 a Mariner.

Also living with him were:
Thomas Hogben aged 27 a Mariner, his Son in Law.
Ann Hogben nee. Harris aged 22 his daughter.
Sarah Hogben their daughter aged 1.
