SECOND GENERATION

5. Charles George SCHUMACHER (2) was born on 29 Dec 1883 in Altamont, IL. He died on 27 Nov 1958 in Altamont, IL.
Charles attended Blue Mound country grade school and Altamont High School. He farmed at the edge of town and was a Rural Mail Carrier for thirty-five years. They first lived across the street east of Klitzing Park then in the west part of Altamont near the railroad. The barn housed the milk cows and pigeon boxes in the hay mow. Milk was bottled and delivered in the neighborhood by George. Pigeons were used for eating. Charles raised and showed Rhode Island Red Chickens and received a "Best of Show" silver cup at a Collinsville show.

The family attended the German Methodist Church on North Main Street until 1916 when that organization was dissolved and the members joined the First Methodist Church. Charles was Sunday School superintendent for many years as well as being on the church board.

Charles and Emma celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in the First Methodist Church. (Updated 1999)

He was married to Emma Matilda EHLERS (daughter of John William EHLERS and Anna Elizabeth LEITZEL) on 27 Nov 1907 in Altamont, IL. Emma Matilda EHLERS (3) was born on 29 Sep 1883 in Altamont, IL. She died on 7 Sep 1973 in Altamont, IL. March 1991
Emma attended Blue Mound country grade school--she and her brother John (died about 1914), sisters Mary and Lola were raised on the John Ehlers farm which was the highest point of Blue Mound--the highest point between Indianapolis and St. Louis on which a wooden tower once stood with a light in it. There was also a dated concrete post. The house burned in February, 1991. Emma and Charles were married in this house on Thanksgiving evening by Rev. Peter Martin.

Emma helped tend a large garden--both vegetable and flower--made "extra" cream from the Schumacher Dairy into butter in a stone churn with a wooden "stomper", loved to quilt, enjoyed picnicing and camping with the Hearns, Kuffels, photographer cousin Harry and Lottie Leitzell, Rev. and Mrs. O. B. Kinsey, and family dinners.

Emma taught a Sunday School class and was active in the Women's Missionary group. (Updated 1999) Charles George SCHUMACHER and Emma Matilda EHLERS had the following children:

child+14 i. Edna Marie SCHUMACHER.
child+15 ii. George Charles SCHUMACHER.
