James Stewart was the fifth Great Steward of Scotland. He was co-Regent of Scotland as one of the six Guardians of the Realm in 1286. He supported the claims of the older Robert Bruce (against John Baliol) for the throne of Scotland. James opposed King Edward I's attempts to dominate Scotland and ratified the treaty with France in 1295. He was forced to submit fealty to Edward I (along with many others) in 1297. He was sent by the English to negotiate with William Wallace, the rebel noble, but joined Wallace instead. James fought for Wallace against the English at Stirling Bridge in 1297. He supported King Robert Bruce and attended Bruce's Parliament at St. Andrews. James was the Steward, and therefore a "Stewart."
