The West Virginia Heritage Enc Cuppl. Compendium, p. 1-2, and Virkus' The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, 1600s-1800s, Vol VII, p. 826, give data that the William "The Corpulent" Alexander descends from the "House of MAcALEXANDER of Tarbet, Kintyre, Scotland." This lends support to the family being connected to John of Tarbert, Kintyre, as presented by other family members.AFN:

"Thomas Alexander 1630 a Royalist went to Ireland 1652. William b. 1676, James 1766-1849. William Alexander came from Scotland before 1675 and settled in Somerset County Md. where he was an extensive trader in lands. Wife unproven. Issue as known, William Jr. m to Catherine. (William known to have been in County Donegal Ireland. He named his farm Raphoe....Archibald Alexander son of Alexander Alexander was born in Scotland in 1610 and had Thomas b. 1630. He went with his 2 brothers, Strong and William to Ireland in 1652 for distaste of the Rump Parliament of Cromwell. They were intensely Presbyterian but loyal to the Catholic Stuarts being blood kinsmen. Thomas had a son William and a daughter who married Joseph Parks. He occupied lands in County Donegal dau Margaret and son William (fat William) had four sons: Archibald, Peter, Robert and William."
