He married Ann Reid on 1784 in County Londonderry, Province Ulster, Northern Ireland^{743, 743}, daughter of William Reid and Mrs. William Reid.

John Douglas Starret (Sterrett) was buried in the Old Cemetery of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, in Rockbridge County, just across the county line from Augusta County.

His parents first names are unknown at this time, but could have been William Starrot whose name appears in the "List of the Protestant Householders in 1740 of Glendermott Parish, in County County Londonderry, Province Ulster, Northern Ireland", who lived in the village of Edenreagh, a mile north of Gortnessy.

His mother was a Douglas.

He was married in 1784 in County Londonderry, Province Ulster, Northern Ireland (ages, -abt.36-abt.32) to Ann Reid. Her parents names are unknown at this time.

They came to America in 1795/6, first settling in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. They removed to Craigsville, Augusta County, Virginia, USA area before the close of the century. John was a storekeeper near Craigsville. He stocked his store from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA though he kept in close contact with County Londonderry, Province Ulster, Northern Ireland whence on one or more occasions he imported flex seed and jewelry. He dealt much in furs, for at that time the rivers of Virginia abounded with beaver.
