The Lexington Gazette, Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia, USA Thurs., June 27, 1889 front page col. 5 reported; "DEATH OF MRS. STERRETT----
Mrs. Rebecca Sterrett, widow of the late Robert Sterrett, [error, should have been James Reid Sterrett] mother of Messrs. Samuel, Mack, Thomas, Tate, Ira, Reed Sterrett, and Mrs. Stuart Thompson, died at her residence on the old home place near Lexington, Wednesday morning at an early hour, after a lingering illness.
Deceased had been in enfeebled health for years. She was a lady of high intelligence, a devoted Christain of great piety, a fond parent, just proud of her noble sons and daughters; a friend and associate of a wide circle of friends from the old stock of this and Augusta county, and in her long life made good use of her allotted days, welding a strong Christian influence over family and friends, laying down her life's work in the Saviors cause making a triumphant entry into eternity, receiving that grandest of all benedictions "well done thou good and faithful servant".
The funeral took place from the family residence Thursday, and the remains were followed by a large cortege of sorrowing relations and friends to old Timber Ridge Church, where the deceased worshipped her God for long years, where the remains were laid to rest.
The Gazette with the entire community, offers its deepest sympathy to the heart-broken relatives. As the venerable mother in Israel beckons her loved ones from the mansion on high, let them follow in her footsteps, that the family circle reunion in eternity may be complete."
