This sturdy pioneer was born in Yorkshire, England, January 28th 1825, and in 1850 emigrated to Canada. He remained a short time, and returned to England, and again came to Canada in 1854, when he joined the pioneer band, which made their first settlement in Minto. He secured lot 33, concession 9, and built a log house. Two years after in (1856) he had made quite substantial clearing and was on the road to prosperity, although at this time money was almost an unknown commodity--most of the trade being carried on it traffic. He took unto himself a wife in the person of Jane Ferguson, daughter of a pioneer, and together they
accumulated a fine property. Besides, the homestead, which is now owned and occupied by his son Charles, he became possessed of 260 acres in
addition, which he left to his family. The old homestead has never had a mortgage on it, and is in an excellent state of cultivation. The late William Epworth was an energetic, pushing citizen, and a man of strict integrity. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Church. He died in 1896, age 71 years.
