Archibald was born December 10 1881. Archibald went west with his brother Daniel, filing on a homestead immediately to the south of Daniel's quarter. Upon selling his land, Archie went up north to a new area just opened to homesteaders in what had now become the province of Saskatchewan. Here he built a store in the new farm village of Beatty, two miles north and eight miles west of Melfort, Saskatchewan. Archie married Luella Lobb, daughter of a pioneer homesteader at Beatty, on December 25 1913. Born, Isle of Islay, Scotland 1837. He is a son of Alexander Ferguson, and came with his father to Canada in 1855, and to Minto in 1857, his father purchasing 140 acres, lot 33, and part of lot 34, con. 5. Here Alexander Ferguson lived until his death in 1863, age 65, his wife passing away 1879, age 67. They both lie in the Bethel Cemetery, Arthur. In 1866 Charles Ferguson married Sarah Ferguson. One of his sons, Alexander, remained on the homestead and runs the farm. The family belong to the Baptist Church and are very much respected. Mr Ferguson was born in Proton Township on May 7 1873, and was the fifth of a family of fourteen, of the late Daniel and Lydia Ferguson. In 1907 he was married to Sarah McIntyre of Glenelg, taking up homemaking on a farm on the 22nd concession of Egremont, where they lived until four years ago when they moved to an adjoining farm in Glenelg township, retiring from farm work owing to the deceased's ill health. He leaves to mourn his passing one son and two daughters, Robert in British Columbia, Mrs. C. Lucas (Sadie) St. Marys, Mrs H.F.Little (Minnie) Toronto, and two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. F. McKinnon, Priceville, Mrs. T. Watson, Holstein, Daniel and Archie of Saskatchewan. One brother John A. of Egremont predeceased him in 1939. The late Mr. Ferguson was of a quiet and kindly disposition and will be missed in the home and community, where he spent most of his life. In religion he was a Disciple of Christ. The funeral on Thursday was largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends. The service was conducted by Rev. Keys of the Baptist Church of Flesherton. Mr. Keys spoke on the Comforting Christ and delivered a hopeful and comforting message. During the service two favorite hymns were sung, 'Jesus Lover of My Soul', and 'Nearer My God to Thee'. The pall bearers were James McDonald, John A Ferguson, Neil A. McQueen, Charles Cameron, Laughie MacKinnon and Hector McEachern. Floral tributes were from the Family, the McIntyre family, Mr. and Mrs. Hallowell, Mrs Little, Mr. and Mrs. P. Howell, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Little, Mrs. Laura Merkley, Mrs. Kay Collinson, the Woolworth Co., Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Little, Mr. and Mrs. William Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. F. Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. J.C.Ferguson. Friends from a distance included: Mr. Ernie Rose and Miss Ethel Rose of Paisley, Mrs. Near, Mrs. Lindsay and Mr. Lightfoot, St. Marys, the Ferguson Bros. The Rev. Daniel and Lydia Ferguson settled on Lot 27. Con. 21, Egremont. He was a minister of the 'Disciples in Christ' faith and a farmer. After his death in 1894 his wife carried on with her family for years before retiring to Mount Forest in 1926. A History of Egremont 1840-1983 pg 282 Land Record Office Record between 1885 until Lydia finally sold the land and moved to Mount Forest. Last record seems to be September 1918. Record number is 11076. They first lived in the Boothville area moving to Lot 11, Con. 11 in 1908. Their family was: Janet Seamon, Lydia MacDonald, Mary McPhaden, Daniel, Margaret, John, Farquhar, and William. He was known as Farmer John, a name given to him in his early teens due to is ambition and love of farming. He was gifted with the art of writing poetry, being able to contribute verses to many causes and occasions. He served his township as councillor and deputy-reeve for some years. He was very active in the Agricultural Society and Plowman's Association. Farmer John passed to his great Reward in 1939. McKechnie's Cemetery Glenelg Township Con 1 NDR Lot 46,47 McKechnie's Cemetery is located 1 mile west of Priceville on Highway #4. It began with a public meeting on November 20 1889 when Daniel Ferguson, William Watson Jr. And Neil McKechnie were elected as first trustees. They purchased part of lot 47 from Ann McKechnie for $2.00 on December 5 1889 and part of lot 46 from Mary, Kate, and Maggie Mckechnie for $2.00 on March 21 1898. Through time the cemetery fell into a state of disrepair until a few years ago Alex Stonehouse instigated its renewal. A fund was set up to continue its upkeep. It contains 27 memorial stones with 67 names. There are others unlisted. No cemetery records are available but there is a mop of plots and their owners. I Donald Ferguson of the Township of Proton in the County of Grey and Province of Ontario being weak in body of sound mind and good memory. Declare this to be my last Will and Testament. I hereby give unto my dear wife five acres of land being the North West Corner of Lot number two in the Eighteenth Concession of the Township of Proton in the County of Grey and Province of Ontario over which five acres the dwelling house and orchard are, and Present Place of abode my dear wife to have the said five acres during her life time, also the sum of thirty Dollars yearly from each of my Sons, Archibald, and Dougal Ferguson, out of the lands given to them from me, the same to be Paid yearly without any deduction to her for her maintenance, also all my house hold furniture and Personal Estate of which I am now possessed of during her life time for her own sole use and benefit and after her death the said Five acres mentioned be divided between my sons Archibald and Dougald each to get equal share, Dougal to have the Easterly Part where the dwelling house and Wells are on and my son Archibald to have the Westerly Part next to his own lot, and after my wife decease all the Personal Estate she may be possessed of to be given to Dougald my son for his use and benefit and I request that if my wife survives me and get old and frail not able to do for herself that my son Dougald will take charge of her and Keep her comfortable and if she requires Doctor attendance and medicine in her old days or anytime when not able to do for her self, that the Expenses of such attendance and medicines be Paid by my sons Archibald and Dougald.
