LEWIS -- LUCAS
At the Baptist parsonage on Thursday, July 9th by Rev. James Chapman, Charles William Lewis to Miss Agnes M Lucas.

From this marriage there were two children and two grandchildren. The saying was that Agnes came from good English stock because she lived just 15 days short of her 102nd birthday.

The Richard Lucas house, left, was built twenty-five years later, but it exhibits the same pleasing simplicity as the Moore residence. The handsome proportions, the green shutters, the transom, and the picket fence all add to the charm of the house. Later Lucas replaced the wooden fence with the short wrought iron one which he purchased from the old Presbyterian cemetery and which lines the front of the property to this day. This house is thought to have been built by Jacob Near and William Cockram; in August 1886 John Clark, who owned the land, took out a mortage, almost certainly to pay for the house's construction. On March 27, 1890 he sold the property for $630 to John Sanderson who, two days later, sold it to Richard Lucas for $700. Mrs. Charles Lewis, Lucas' daughter, recalls, as a young girl, taking the monthly mortgage payments of $7 down to Sanderson's Drug Store. This house has been in the same family for all but four of its 96 year history. Parents: Richard Lucas and Elizabeth Bristow.

The following Obituary was obtained from the United Church of Canada Archives from 'The New Outlook' June 8, 1927 p. 24

The Late Rev. Aquila Lucas

The Rev. Aquila Lucas, son of John and Mary Fletcher Lucas, was born in Old Weston, Huntingdonshire, England in 1847. He inherited the rich legacy of godly parentage. It is not surprising therefore, that, before the age of sixteen he became a Christian of clearly defined experience. His ambition to make the most of his redeemed life was manifest in his zealous pursuit of an education. While yet busily engaged with his father in the tailoring business he managed by private arrangement with Mr. Geo. Lee, principal of Rounds School, to keep up his studious habits. His characteristic courageous and self sacrificing spirit was early revealed in publicly identifying himself with the temperance reform movement which at that time was a very unpopular cause.

In 1874 Mr. Lucas with eleven other young men volunteered for work in the British American Conference. He and his companions were accepted and became known to the Church under the Gospel name of the Twelve Apostles. Mr. Lucas received as his first appointment was Souris, Prince Edward Island. After ten years successful ministry in P.E.I. and New Brunswick he became a field secretary and organized the New Brunswick Sunday School Association. For this work he showed distinguished ability. In 1904 he returned to the pastorate, but in 1906 the International Sunday School Association petitioned Conference to release him for there work. The petition was granted. During eight laborious years he carried forward this very valuable department of Christian activity, extending his organizing mission to the West Indies, Central America, and the northern part of South America.

In 1913 after forty-two years of valuable and diversified service in the Master's Kingdom Mr. Lucas moved to London, Ont. In 1916 he was granted a superannuated relationship in the Methodist Church. During the ten years of his retired life he became well known for his zeal in Sunday school work, pulpit ability and vigilant advocacy of moral reforms and his aggressive Christianity.

Rev. Aquila Lucas is worthy of a place in the honor of the pioneers and pathfinders of the Christian Church in Eastern Canada. Versatile and virile he had left us a good example of the courageous self sacrificing abandonment that has ever distinguished the heroes of the Gospel.

Mr. Lucas is survived by his devoted wife, Hattie J. Lucas, and by five sons and six daughters. The members of this strong family are left with the precious memory of a home of prayer and Christian instruction. 'The just man walketh in his integrity and his children are blest after him'. His strong physical and mental energies were not easily overcome by disease, but eventually, after four months of suffering, 'the earthy house was removed to the building of God, the house not made with hands', September 15th, 1926 in his 79th year.

Appropriate services were conducted in the home and afterwards at Empress Ave. Church. of which the deceased was a faithful and highly respected member. In the presence of a representative congregation brief addresses were delivered by Rev. Dr. MacGregor, President of Conference, Rev. Geo. W. Dewey, and the pastor of the church, Rev. J.F. Chapman, Reverends Kirkland and Bradshaw also took part. In Woodand Cemetery, London, the mortal body of the faithful servant of God was laid to rest in certain hope of glorious resurrection.

A TRIBUTE
Late Aquila Lucas

This was received in a letter from the Maritime Conference Archives dated July 9 1996

With the passing of the late Rev. Aquilla Lucas at his sons' home in London Ontario there is made necessary the dropping from the roll of former Methodist ministers in Canada the name of a man whose contribution to the religious life of his time was outstanding and altogether unique. This brief resume of his life and work is offered by a brother minister who has the facts at hand, on behalf of hundreds of his friend and fellow workers in the Province of New Brunswick, as their grateful and loving tribute of praise to the memory of a truly great man. For, if to offer oneself a servant to childlife is still as it was in the days of the Master of Galilee, a sign of true greatness, then Rev. Aquilla Lucas was indeed truly great. From the days when he with is father started a Sunday School in the old home community in Old Weston, Eng. (his father as superintendent, he as boys' teacher) when he was yet in his middle teens, until the time of his death, the love for teaching the children and youth the ways of righteousness and truth never burned low and in due time in his career became the all controlling directing passion of his life. The present generation in the Province of New Brunswick probably owes more to Rev. Aquilla Lucas for the religious education than to any other individual of the time, and all over the territory in which he travelled in Sunday School work during the last decade of the previous century and the larger part of the first two of the present one, there are scores of men and women who rise up today and call him blessed as there are many who look back upon their association with him and his work as the source of their inspiration for attempting something of real service in the Kingdom of God.
Quoting from his autobiographical notes left for his own family; "Mr ----- in Queens Co. appeared one day in a small parish convention in a new homespun suit. He seemed interested. In later years was made president and later still became a Free Baptist minister. He told me that God led him by the way of Organized S. S. Work." E. R. M. said 'call and tell me more about this work: He became framer of our T. T. Dept and a valuable executive member'. Miss T. from a back settlement started with a teacher training course and ended a missionary in Japan. Miss J. R. --- landed in Korea a missionary after having been lead to dedicate her life to God through the Organized Sunday School Work. 'Rev G. M. Y. told a congregation that my life and work was his inspiration for church work".
Quoting further, (speaking of work in N. B.) ' I had spent thirteen years in this work, giving my life unreservedly, and laying my home and family under tribute for it also. (He was constantly in the field). I had been faithful to every pastor, striving to bind the pastor more closely to his school, and the superintendents more closely to their pastors' ... God's hand was on the work. Schools were increased. Others were made more efficient. Many teachers were instructed -- Religious and intellectual standards were raised .. and Sunday Schools became a greater force for righteousness' ... 'This surely was the loveliest of all Christian work. It was for childhood and youth and for those who lived and worked for them.' 'I knew I was as great a blessing to Methodism as when in the pastorate while I was no less a blessing to people of other denominations. Sometimes I was suspected and opposed by pastors of my own as well as other denominations. The laity generally was true and appreciative.
It is still true of a great many of God's people, that they are 'fools and slow of heart to believe'. So we are not surprised to read from these notes by this great pioneer in Religious Education work in Canada, "My only reason for resigning my position was that in countries my work was made void by ministers". Ministers, note fellow-workers in the Kingdom! A true pioneer's lot.
And truly he was of the pioneer spirit. Hardly had he gotten settled in the pastorate again before a call came from the International Sunday School Association, asking him to take up work for them among the Sunday School workers of the West Indies and South America. On Nov 5th 1906 he left his home again, another Abraham going out for God into a strange land. From that time until 1914 he spent more than eight months of every year in the West Indies, Central and South America, seeking to instruct and inspire the Sunday School workers, chiefly those among the colored races, African and East Indian finding a Godly fellowship among the ministers and missionaries of other churches that his own, mostly from the old land.
In 1914, while preparing to return for a few months on special work for International Associations, having resigned from the regular work that year, war was declared, and all steamships plying between the Islands were commandeered for war purposes. This upset all his plans for God's war down there, and proved to be the end of his active work in a field in which he was a truly great, a much loved, and a most efficient pioneer--the field of Religious Education and with all a humble Methodist minister. However idleness was no part of his make up. Consequently up until quite recent years, when his infirmities of the flesh made it impossible, he did much work by way of pulpit supply, and District and County Sunday School Convention work in and around London, Ontario.
Of late years he was a sufferer from heart trouble. In May of the present year he was found by his family lying in his garden, which throughout all his life was a source of much pleasure to him. The doctors said, 'angina pectoria, only a matter of days'. However he lingered, and suffered, as few of us are called upon to suffer, for almost four months before the Father
heard his prayer and released him.
Aquilla Lucas was born in Old Weston, Huntingdonshire, England on the 5th of Oct 1847. In the year 1860 he began his career as a Religious Educationist by teaching a class of boys in his father's Sunday School in his home community. In 1870 he went to London for a business position, having learned the tailoring trade from his father. Here he attended Danbeigh church of which Rev. Albrighton was the superintendent minister. Having taken to the preaching work in the outlying communities he was approached by his minister with reference to coming out to Eastern British North America, where young ministers were needed, and by him was recommended to Reb. Angwin who was in England at the time looking for young men for the Conference of B. N. A. In 1871 with 11 others he came out to Halifax from whence these 'twelve apostles' (as they have ever since been called by themselves and buy other friends), were distributed among the three maritime provinces. Mr Lucas went to Souris, P. E. I. where he stayed two years. Then he was stationed at York under superintendency of Reb. G. O. Huestis, where he stayed until ordination in 1875. The ordination class of that year, at Charlottetown included among others, John Ellis, Charles Wesley Hamilton, John C. Barrie, and Aquilla Lucas. In August of the same year he was married to Miss Harriett Bridges daughter of the last Robert and Emma Bridges. Following fields of labor were Alberton, Havelock, (later Petitcodiac) Milltown, Nashwauk, Jerusalem, then Sussex. While at Sussex he was invited to become the Field Secretary for the N. B. Sunday School Association. When Conference was memorialized to release Bro. Lucas for this work the motion was bitterly opposed and almost lost, on the grounds that it was wrong for a man thus to leave the ministry of the gospel. "So much a long communion tends to make us what we are;" And so closely did the Conference stick to its opinion that he was refused the privilege of paying into the (then) Supernumerary Fund of the Church. Not till years later was the privilege granted, and even then he was not allowed to pay for the years that had elapsed. This certainly was an injustice his church did to him.
Following the profession of Sunday School Association Secretary he served with the N. B. Association for thirteen years, and as noted above, with the International S. S. Association as Field Secretary in the West Indies and Central and South America for eight years. Between the two periods of secretaryships he served the fields of Bustouche and Keswick in the Conference of New Brunswick and P. E, Island, 1904 to 1906
In 1913 he purchased a small garden farm outside London, Ontario, and thither removed his family, retiring to that place in 1914. Later his two unmarried sons purchased a large market garden farm and greenhouse plant outside the city of London and he and Mrs. Lucas with one daughter went to live with them.
From this home he was called by God to his reward on Wednesday September 15th in this 79th year, and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, London, on the 17th.
As previously noted a rather remarkable circumstance of his passing is that his death is the first break in the family circle for over half a century. On August 5th 1925 his eleven sons and daughters, together with their 24 grandchildren (the total number born) gathered to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of their parents. Thus 51 years passed without the call of death coming to any member of the family--a truly wonderful record surely.
Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn the passing of a devoted husband and father, 5 sons and 6 daughter, Frank E. Toronto; Mrs. (Rev) E. W. Halpenny (Clementine) Lansing, Michigan; Mrs. John Bulivant, (Agnes) London; Rober B., Gary, Indiana; John, Wallace, Idaho; Mrs. Thomas Layfield (Gertrude) MIssoula, Montana; Mrs. Arthur Buzzard (Minnie) Missoula, Montana; Mrs. (Rev) A. F. Baker, Arcadia, Nova Scotia; Albert E, Harold R, and Ruth D at home.
To all these his scores of friends and fellow workers in all his wide field of labors extend the deepest Christian sympathy.
Servant of God. well done!
Thy glorious warfare's past;
The battles fought, the race is won,
And thou are crowned at last.

In the War Arthur joined the Fleet Air Arm as a photographer and grew a beard. He was stationed in East Africa when he wrote his last newsy letter to his bother Stan in late 1943. But in February 1944 he was serving on the Ministry of War Transport SS'Khedive Ismail'- a converted liner of 7513 tons - when she was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat off the Maldive Islands. Of the 1324 troops and 183 crew aboard, 1134 troops and 137 crew were lost making this the third worst loss of life on a troopship in the Second World War. Among the dead was Photographer A W Lucas.
A month later the BEF reported his death and printed his photograph and his name is remembered on Wooburn War Memorial and in the Memorial Book.
His brother Sidney served in the army in the Middle East and later became manager of Slough Greyhound Stadium. Stan, the youngest of the three brother, was a pre-war Territorial, serving with Wilf Saunders (qv) and Dennis Braybrooke, and served in Burma after Dunkirk. Their father died in 1942 and their mother in 1959. After the War Arthur's wife and children went to live in London.

The eldest of Walter and Beatrice May Lucas's three sons, Arthur was born in Holy Yard off Hedsor Road, Borune End, in October 1907. Later the family moved to 7 Riversdale Cottages, and then in about 1928, they moved to 2 Spring Cottages in Upper Bourne End. Meanwhile Sidney Thomas had been born in 1911, and Stanley Robert in 1917. All three boys attended Bourne End School.
Leaving school at 14 Arthur served a 4 year apprenticeship in photography with Grevilles of Maidenhead. But he had wide interest, taking 'The Wireless' magazine and building his own'cats whiskers' set - reputedly the first in Bourne End - to listen to 2LO. And he played the Madoline in a band, commuted to Maidenhead on his giant 'Indian' motorbike, and skated on frozen Wooburn Meadows opposite Riversdale Cottages.
Very tall - he was 6'4" - and good looking, he was a 'wonderful temperament' and played patiently with his younger brothers.
In 1928 when he was 21 Arthur Lucas emigrated to Canada and opened a photographic studio in Toronto. He was recently married and Audrey Alice Lucas followed three months later. The studio started well but the Great Depression followed all too soon and eventually they sold up and returned to England. The family then lived with his parents and Arthur went to work for Kodak. Then, early in the War the family moved next door to No 3 Spring Cottages, known as 'Rathmines'.
Arthur and Audrey produced two children, Gay and Sheridan - known as Sherry.
